There isnt any such thing as the best Linux distro. Like elekis, I will tell you the same thing. It depends on what you want to use your system for and your level of knowledge. Assuming you have no prior experience with Linux, Mandrake, Fedora or Ubuntu will be good for a start(just to name a few). For advanced users Slackware would be good.
Take a look at this thread:

Pretty much exactly the same question you asked and there's loads of suggestions in there.

Ubuntu is very popular and very easy to install and configure.
GENTOO HANDS DOWN.
DO NOT USE UBUNTU, please.
This distro is definitely the best distro around. That is, I'm assuming you are willing to be patient in installing this system.

I've found Ubuntu not too good at recognising all my devices. Best has been Xandros which does have a free version though you have to hunt for it a bit on www.xandros.com.

Always the latest, 2.6.14
If you're referring to gnu/Linux distros, read others.

fedora is a good choice.
Personally i love redhat and Suse. But other's may disagree
I have used slackware suse and mandrake in the past. I love and use gentoo for the last year.
Go for Fedora Core 4 now.
For it is the most supported and updated distro in the whole Linux community.
You can change to Debian\GNU when you are a pro.

I don't think that there is a "better" version of Linux. Just like everything else, each version has its high points and then it's flaws. It all depends on what you want it to do.

Of course, there are distros because they are all suited to different people.
http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ this site is pretty good to find the right one for you, it helped me a lot.
I only haven't got linux at the moment, because I am about to start an A-level in Computing, which mainly involves Visual Basic, which for some reason, apparently doesn't work on Linux.

i prefer mandriva for newbies, slack for advanced users, for geeks gentoo, server Debian of Red Hat, other workstation debian
I love Suse 10.1 Wonderful, i've used suse from the start back at 9.1 *when i got into linux) Tried others, don't like them nearly as much.
I tried many linux distros.
Finally I recommend Ubuntu.
But if you are very familiar with SuSe, Mandriva or Fedora, forget about other distros.
