mxtabs seems to be (temporarily?) shut down because of this.
I hear they're also going to make posting lyrics for songs illegal. Give me a break.
I suppose they actually do have the power to do this with their copyrights, but why bother? It isn't like this is "hurting business" as they claim (right or wrong on that claim doesn't matter for this discussion) downloading to be doing, and people, for the most part, won't use this stuff to imitate the songs seriously. And even if they would, it is possible to do that just by listening to the songs and repeating the music and lyrics.
yes i got angry. I bought a new CD, not really new just this year new, the other day and i listened to this sick song and wanted to learn the solo. I went to my favorite tab site (mxtabs) and it wasnt mxtabs anymore! i was like wtf! This would suck.
Yes, The MPA (music publishers assosiation) is shuttin a ton of guitar tab sites down because they claim
its copywritten matirial
this was from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm read more there if you would like....

The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics.
The US Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006. |
I think its a shame that there doing this who would want to buy a whole book if there looking for one solo? these books are about 2-30 dollars for ONE book...
the songs are transcribed by ear though.... I dont think its such a bad thing.....

That's just crazy. Stipud even. Of course, it makes complete logical sense for music companies to shut down mp3 sites and sites which profit by selling other "sell-able"album/music-related stuff, but banning sites from hosting thier interpretations of the tabs?
Suddenly, I feel like copyrighting all of my witty and hilarious posts...
I can understand the copyright issue, but why does anyone care about tabs?
If I show you the chords to some stupid song or you look it up on the internet, where is the difference?
I have never heard of anybody making money by using tabs.
Just another case of principle ridden idiots.
Well, I look up music sometime a tab site too. Sad to know that they are all shutting down. Doesn't really matter to me. My band usually make up our own music
i guess more people can learn it by ear then.....they can't do anything to you for that =) thats what im doing say screw the MPA i might get a tab here and there i'll write more solos
i'll do WAY more by ear....
This is stupid...LimeWire or something similar should make a TABS and LYRICS section just to stick it to "the man"...
Are they gonna ban me from singing along too loudly to my iPod in case someone else accidently picks up the lyrics???
They seriously need to wake up...any idiot can see they lost the fight before they started it...

Er... They can't do that. I don't even think the AUDIO section is supposed to be used for songs, just like speeches and stuff. But, they can't really regulate what people do on P2P networks.
(Well, they could, but... No.)

Of course they couldnt...the focus was meant to be on the "stick it to the man" rather than the "LimeWire or something similar"...but lets not pretend there is anything but illegal MP3s movies and pr0n on those networks...you know it isnt true...

I'd really like to know how these music executives minds work!!
This ruthless technology that is supposedly starving the music industry was born along side the technology that makes 90% of these cackling “artists” sound good anyway –simpson speers - .
If ANYTHING I would assume that these tab sites are promoting the music. Technology is only improving. Either this industry can embrace it and find ways to us it, and the people that use it, to their advantage; or they can try this stupid crap. These “artists” need to get a hold of their handlers. What happened to art belonging to the society that embraces it?
That is so Crap! Why do they care if you want to learn and play their song! They sould be fricken privileged! As for the lyrics noone can shut down thousands of websites with lyrics! But what does learning lyrics from the web have to do with the price of eggs? It doesnt hurt how much money they lose (probably) i dont go and look at the booklet you get I just learn from hearing it.
How CAN you make money out of tabs? This is REALLY crap. For beginners like me, we need tabs and advice from sites like this. And the people who take care of the copyright laws are getting a bit silly. I dont see why they brought out mp3's when everyone knows they would rather download from sites like limewire then the ones that cost an arm and a leg. Or we could just rip the music off of cd's onto the computer. Very silly is the word i think of when issues like this come up.
Next they are going to close down all the lyrics sites.
powertabs is now down also.
It's a good thing I spidered those sites and now have 50,000 tabs then, huh?
mmwahaha
