Those are both very good...try getting some codecs to go with them too..such as Divx, XVID and I hear the new h.264 (is it?) Is supposed to have excellent compression. You should be able to load all these codecs into virtual dub

Since you didn't mention what OS you're using, for a Mac iTunes, Quicktime 7 Pro, and Handbrake are very good apps. That's what I use...... Smile

Lame is by far the best quality mp3 encoder, but unfortunately, it doesn't come with software since it's just a codec. I can highly recommend that you use CDex to convert audio from your CDs to mp3. It uses the Lame codec and will give you excellent results.

There are subtle differences between different mp3 codec - the main two being Lame and Fraunhofer.

Fraunhofer tends to be used by commercial applications such as Windows Media Player and MusicMatch Jukebox, but this is because the Fraunhofer is able to convert audio to mp3 much more quickly than Lame. Unfortunately though, this means it is not as "accurate", ie. it is lower quality.

Lame is widely regarded to have the highest quality output, but it can take between 30 secs and 1 minute to encode each song from a CD. This is considerably slower than the Fraunhofer codec, but the higher quality is a bonus.

If you encode mp3s at very high qualities (eg. 320Kbps CBR or 100%VBR), you will probably not be able to notice any quality differences between the two codecs. However, if you use 128 or 192Kbps, it is quite possible that you would notice a difference in quality between the two codecs. The advantage to using Lame is that in the same file size, you can get a higher quality track, or you can achieve the same quality at a lower bitrate.

If you would normally use 192Kbps with Fraunhofer, 160Kbps Lame would probably be equivalent quality, but at smaller file sizes. If you use 128Kbps Fraunhofer, try 128Kbps Lame and you will notice improved quality.

For mp3, of cource "Lame" (or WinLame). For video it's stupid question - what SOURCE you use for converting? There is many: Protected DVD :) , simple vob's, WMV, mpeg1,2,4, and so on, even QuickTime. In any case there is good site to help you: www.doom9.org - check it.
Also good to know that there is H.264 standard - find and read something about it.
Enjoy!
