Christmas is near and you can expect a cool gift from Santa (Google) this time. Google is planning to launch PCs for markets in India and China. According to the report by India’s leading newspaper, Hindustan Times, (Report not available online) Google will be launching the PCs with California based Wyse technology.

The PCs won’t have CPU; they will be bundled with Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor. The PC will connect to the hosted system on their server and the remote OS will manage storage and functioning of the PC. This will keep PC away from virus and also provide secure solution for storage of the user data.

The PC will run on software created by Google; hardware and other technicalities will be managed by Wyse technology.

The PCs will be available for Rs. 9,000 (INR) i.e. approximately $200

This opens door for much talked Google OS, GBrowser and Google’s office application.

Wouldn't this increase the threat of virus's rather than decrease it. I mean if someone gets into the main system and reak havok with a virus then wouldn't all of the PC's face the same problem?
Also if someone can break into the system then wouldn't they be able to access all the computers on the network and all the files?
If so then this would mean a greater interest in getting into the system int the first place surely and totally to more destuction all round.

Wouldn't doing all the computing on their centralized server enable Google to track, archive and profile users' personal computer usage details as well ?

So first it was my internet surfing habits.
Then my email.
And now they are interested in what I do on my own computer when I'm not searching the internet or reading writing email.

Are they curious or what ?

This will keep my personal data away from viruses and me.
Did they say secure storage ?
with Google ?
???

I wonder how secure one can feel with their personal data in somebody else's hand.
And especially if that somebody is a giant American corporate.

Ironic how this will allow Google to keep a detailed record of users' offline activities.
Just like Santa does of little kids !

well if you dont want to, no one is forcing you is it? its not like in 1998, where my only options were Win 3.1, Win 95 and Win 98.
also it would be difficult to infect the system if they are running a linux variant like google does for its search engine farm.

the only flaw i can see is of the connectivity. how will the systems connect to the main server?

if they bring out WiFi to solve that then i will be happy Very Happy

also they would be better off with the hand cranked laptop model that the UN is proposing to release. that takes care of power issues too Smile

I don't mind using GMail... it's fast and easy to use, and I don't really have much to hide, even if Google likes to see what kind of mails I get or what my browsing habits are.

But store my personal data on Google's giant all-absorbing server? Not a chance in hell.

And now, with PC prices crashing (you can probably get a good enough basic PC for around 20k), I don't think the 9000/- privacy-less PC is such an attraction. I'd like to keep all my data within my own reach, thank you very much, without the prying eyes of such a major corporation from any nation.

Hmmm....

Consider this scenario...
I buy such a PC with 200 Gb of storage (which is on a rather powerful Google™ server, ofcourse)
And I get an internet connection to go with it. (which should be rather high quality Google™ connectivity)
And I install Apache & MySQL on it. Idea

Voila ! my own Virtual Private Server !

I'm going to start a business.
Reselling Google's services to people outside India.
Please contact me for details when Google launches this service. Wink

by the way, what about the monthly charges and uptime guarantee ?
They can't just ask me to pay up every month after having just bought my PC, can they ?

@tidruG, even back in the late 90's one could get a PC for around 10 grand (I got a pentium)
and now ofcourse, one can get a pretty decent pre-owned or stock-clearance P3 system for that kind of money.
