Cannot play streaming media

I have a problem that with IE I cannot play any embedded media. Such as yahoo music or anything related to WMP. Quicktime and real videos work. I have tried installing WMP and it's codecs many times but still no luck. It gives an error like cannot play the specified protocol try rtsp:// or http:// or something. Although its only http.

I have tried for the longest time to fix this wierd mystery so I appreciate if any has ideas

Do you have a firewall that's blocking Windows Media Player from accessing the internet? Has it blocked specific ports?

Have you checked through your browser's security settings to see if plugins have been disabled?

Sorry I should have specified this too...when copying and pasting the links to media (where available) I can play it fine in WMP. I tried turning the security all the way down, but no go. I don't know if it could be a plugin or security still? I mean QT and real work fine :\
