I am putting a ftp server on my home computer so people can upload there own photos to it though the browser i am using serv-u ftp program. Would this be a security risk to do and is it possible so they can only upload jpeg, gif, png files to it so they dont upload a virus to it.
Question
Moved to computer problems and support.
IMO, in the FTP program, there should be something to "limit" what they can upload.

i do not think you can filter by file extension using serv-u...you would need an add-on like this http://www.technoblest.com/ftpservu/addons.htm#ServUTC.
yes there is a security risk, be sure to do your homework in this area.

You know png files can still be viruses, there was a hole in windows awhile back that made it so that a .png.exe was recognized as a .png and web servers would do the same, yet the file still acted as a .exe
for anyone who hasn't patched this hole yet, they can still be infected, and your FTP may still accept a .png.exe as a .png
so if l were you, l would limit to .jpg .jpeg and .gif
this will help you avoid a little bit of trouble later on down the road
ok thanks for the replys. ill just make it jpg, jpeg and gif. What would the security risk be if i was to do it?
