Hey, how do I install a localhost server?

guissmo
Please reply with an answer.
I need it.
arch23
which server do you need? - asp? php? windows? linux?
Nyizsa
You have two options: use IIS (Internet Information Services) from Microsoft, or (I recommend) use Apache.
(If you have WinXP Home edition, Apache is your option. It is free, too.)
Ok. So, for IIS:
http://www.w3schools.com/asp/asp_install.asp
Look for your OS, then follow the instructions.

For Apache (and PHP):
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/00/44/index4a.html?tw=programming
Again, check for your system and follow the instructions.

Good luck!

PS: And DO pay attention for typos! Wink

You'll need to install a webserver like IIS or Apache for that. IIS is easier to administer as compared to Apache. Then if you plan on using PHP scripts on your server, you'll have to install PHP on your system. If you want to implement mail support, for that you'll have to install a... you guessed it! A mail server.

Extremely simple install for php, mysql, phpMyAdmin and more. Installs a GUI control panel for all and automates installing them as services.

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

If you use the MySQL it's version 5 and Frihost uses a previous version. If you export using phpMyAdmin to upload to a live frihost site, use the previous version option so that it will be compatible.

Enjoy

There have a package can install all your need for php,it's name easyphp,It's include apache and mysql and php and phpmyadmin!

I recommend Xampp mentioned 2 posts above. It has almost every web language you need Server Side Scripts for pre installed. Except ASP I think.. or some obscure microsoft script.
Although you should note it isnt the most secure system so should really be used for testing rather than large scale web hosting.

You can try:
Wamp Server
or
Apache2triad
I tried them both, they work very fine and you shouldn't have any problems with them.

I second this!
I am a newby with respect to web servers and so on, but even I got it running in no time. And once you get to know your way around, it is easily modifiable, although not all the credit for that goes to Apachefriends,as they only install the easy going Apache server.

Well i think he just needs it for testing purposes, relying on frihost hosting for everything else. SO yes, xampp is the best solution, i`ve been using it for 3 years now and is the best for home testing

I just want to rectify that there is no such thing as a localhost server.
I think that you are referring to a web server or something. Is that it?
There are many "servers" out there you know. There's Apache, a web server, MySQL or PostgreSQL, database servers (to be able to use MySQL and PostgreSQL respectively).

First, tell me what OS you are using.

Basically, if you are looking for a "Free" but reliable web server, Apache is the best choice. I think it is the best web server out there. That is why it is used by almost all servers in the net.

I think you would also want to install MySQL or PostgreSQL for that matter.

But first, please tell us about your OS.

If you have linux then use follow:
YUM
Code:
# sudo yum install apache
# sudo yum install php

APT-GET
Code:
# sudo apt-get install apache
# sudo apt-get install php

Apache is best in linux and comes within some distrubtions.

Or...

sudo yum install apache2 (for Apache2)
sudo yum install php5 (for PHP5)
sudo yum install libapache2-mod-php5 (to use PHP5 as an Apache2 module)

Or via apt-get also...

sudo apt-get install apache2 (for Apache2)
sudo apt-get install php5 (for PHP5)
sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 (to use PHP5 as an Apache2 module)

Those are the package names in Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu. I do not know if they also apply to other distros like Mandriva, SUSE, Red Hat, or Fedora. Honestly, I don't even know if there is an apt-get for Red Hat-derived distros or just any other distro which uses RPM.

Apache is a very good start for learning how to manage a web server !!
It is not easy at the beginning but with good tutorials, you will find your way quite easily ans quite quickly as well !
Don't forget to read carefully the official documentation !

I prefer phpdev for this. Its small and does it all in one click. [php, mysql]

Although there are not much expanding options.

Just download it from the phpdev site and install. its around 10 mb.

For Asp, i hope previous posts will help u.

The best solution is install manualy Apache from http://apache.org , PHP from http://php.net , MySQL from http://mysql.com . And then install all extentions what you need Wink

If OS is Windows, I think it is good to install all the software using a all-in-one package.

However, if the OS is Linux, I agree that you could install them one by one. I download the software packages in the following locations:

MySQL 4.1
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.html

Apache
http://archive.apache.org/dist/httpd/

PHP
http://hk.php.net/releases.php

Installation is a bit complex for the beginners, but once you get used to it, it is not difficult, e.g. for installation of apache, refer to the following link:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/en/install.html

Download $ lynx http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi
Extract $ gzip -d httpd-2_0_NN.tar.gz
$ tar xvf httpd-2_0_NN.tar
Configure $ ./configure --prefix=PREFIX
Compile $ make
Install $ make install
Customize $ vi PREFIX/conf/httpd.conf
Test $ PREFIX/bin/apachectl start

...

please note that sometimes you need to install zlib, autoconf, automake, turck-mmcache, etc.

Good Luck!

For testing purpose (even though the creator says it's safe for production use, I'm not sure I'lll recommend it ) Uniform server is genial.

It dont install anythin on your computer, you can run it from a memory stick if you like, and it have sql/php support. Just click and play Very Happy There is little tinkering with config if you want to autostart as service, but otherwize, just unzip and start.

okay....he tells us to reply but where is he????

for anyone else: try easyphp (comes with apache and ready to use. just install it.)

or try MiniPortal. Miniportal's the best but u will have to buy it. its not expensive. go try for it. i recommend this one.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned more in this thread. Yes, I prefer setting up each module individually for config reasons, but if you really only want something simple, it will suffice.

Frihost not support such type of instllation of web softwares.

if you want to install wordpress first download the latest version of wordpress from its official.

then upload it to your frihost account.

after that run web installer of wordpress.

I agree with the post above.

Though i use something different. Try XAMPP from apache friends.

Quote:
XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl

It's very easy to install (relative to other localhost server installers), you can even install a portable version of it (in a flash drive, etc.).[/url]
ogah
use XAMPP
or use usb web server no need installation (googling it if interested)
