What do you think of Van Nguyen hanging?
What do you think of Van Nguyen's hanging for drug smuggling in Singapore? Let me know what you think. If you think that hanging just breakes their neck and kills them, your way off, hanging is EXTREMLY grousem. I won't go into the details here, because it may offend some people, but please e-mail me at michaelcarpenter@graffiti.net if you do. Tell us your thoughts...
idealisticly speaking: its a shame this is how we treat our drug addicted brothers....heroin as anyone will tell you takes a hold and never lets go. the ex-junkies i've met have all had this one thing in common...its kind of like they are uber selfish...its strange , but im sure someone knows what I mean. I believe we should use plants and herbs in there natural state - more or less. In the case of heroin , that would be opium. Lest we forget it is the homosapien who took the plant to the lab and created heroin , same goes for cocaine - and crack cocaine. I've smoked opium , should I be hanged ? (hell no!) In portugal , they have more or less decriminalised all drugs - including heroin. its 'ok' to be caught with a personal amount of any drug , it is illegal to refuse the rehabilitation they offer you after your;re caught. A step in the right direction - tho kind of ODD as the christian right in brussells are trying to take a more american approach to things , a step at a time.
Realisticly speaking: He should have known better than to try and bring 400g of heroin out of singapore into australia - two nations with drachonian laws on the matter, but who can say what his personal situation was......He shouldnt have been hung.
Interestingly enough , they took a poll in australia to see who thought it was ok , and who was against it , I recall that 46 percent agreed with the hanging. I believe the fact he was of vietnamese decent contributed to this result - I believe that theres alot of racism floating about australia and it would be easy for them to say its ok to hang him, but thats just my opinion. Anyways - the only kind of crimes that I would even consider hanging someone for , are crimes of non-consent...such as rape and paeophilia , how people can get so irked and irrated by someones choice in drug use and want their life expired is surely down to politics , yet rapists and paedophiles escape with their lives ? ....its beyond me.
understandably , if a mother (who doest read books , or never really thought for herself) loses a child to a heroin overdose...they are likely to blindly accept what politicians are asking for , permission to lock them up indefinatly and or kill them .........
also , who cares what most australians think - up until 1956 the aboriginees were 'fair game'. that is to say , legal to shoot much like a pheasant or vermin.
my ultimate conclusion is man should stay out of the labs , and leave the plants in their natural state. its only a recipe for disaster to ;play god;
anyways , he shouldnt have been hung.

I am from Singapore and i have mixed feelings on this issue that has been imo overly exaggerated and blown up in some press.
Firstly, I would say that the drugs that he had brought into Singapore could have provided 26,000 doses of potentially lethal drugs to addicts. The stern stand of Singapore in this issue could have possibly acted as a deterance to other drug dealers and others to smuggle drugs.
However on the other hand i would say that the circumstances has caused him to smuggle the drugs was sad to know.

Singapore is well known for its hard stance on crime, so surely he should have thought about the risks before he made the decision.
I suppose he would have got a good price for it over there though

Look
The issue isn't about how serious his crime is. I couldn't care less whether he was smuggling drugs, killing litte schoolgirls or throwing paper in the streets. The point is: The death penalty is barbaric. disgraceful and repelling, no matter what crime the defendant has committed,
And this message goes out to the US just as it goes out to every other country.

rapists need to die. forget your sanctimonious 'lifes just too precious' horseshit , violent sociopaths are better off dead. such is life.
no one should die for the personal choices they make , when it only effects their life. such as a junkies decision to take heroin.

i might be the only one in this forum who beleives he deserved it..i'm sorry i mean come on he chopped out bodies of women..i'm all for capial punishment if they deserve it
If we condemn someone for taking a life, should we punish him by taking his life?
That would mean that we are just as bad as we say he is.
It is not up to us to take somebody's life: if we think punishment is due, we should lock him up for a period of time, if deemed necessary for as long as he lives. But if we think that we are better than a criminal, we should not act as a criminal.
