Linux AVI & DVD plugins

ocalhoun
I use SuSE linux 9.2, and I would like to be able to play AVI format videos and DVD's. However whenever I try it (with, for example, xine) I get error messages to the tune of "codec not supported" or "for legal reasons the plugin for playing this type of file has been excluded from this distrobution"

Where do I find the plugins I need, and where do I put them on my HDD?
(or how are they installed?)

You can test MPlayer-1.0pre7,http://www4.mplayerhq.hu/,

You need the dvdcss library, likely. I don't have a dvd drive, but I know that this is needed to play back dvds. I wonder if mp3s are playable on Suse. Fedora didn't include that too.

You might want to look on http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/178/42/ and see how to insert the codec (and a lot of other cool Suse hacks.

What you need to do is run YaST -> Software Management (or Add/Remove Programs)... search for Xine and uninstall the Xine-libs package and xine ui + any programs that may rely on Xine (theyll show in the search) such as Totem etc. The Xine Lib package has been modified by the SuSE hackers to show their protest to DVD Piracy (Similar to RedHats lack of support for mp3 playback, anyways...). You then need to download and install the following packages in this order:

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm

That package should activate your DVD/AVI playback support...

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/libxine1-1.1.2cvs-051205.i586.rpm

Reinstalls a fresh Xine Backend...

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/xine-ui-0.99.4cvs-051003.i586.rpm

Reinstalls the Xine UI Front end for you...

If these files install correctly, you should be able to view your DVD's and your AVI files within linux. Wink

Hope this helps.

There is another, better, solution, of course. Use another distro (and FC is not on my suggested list) that already supports what you want.

Just install the VLC (VideoLan Client) and doubt no longer all those plugins/codecs/etc.
Well, almost all... Very Happy
