why do some people have cpanel and some people have directadmin? what is the difference? I am just about to look at their websites....

It depends on when their account was created. Newer accounts are using DirectAdmin. (The cPanel can't handle the number of users and costs more.)
Which is quite unfortunate for us newer members. We don't have Fantastico. 
Fantastico might be easy to install software, but it also occupies a lot of space because people forget to remove the files after testing the software. DirectAdmin is also much faster than cpanel, certainly for account creators.
