One more bug or easter egg in Microsoft Windows!
This is quiet interesting....
1) Create a folder on the desktop and name it as "Notepad"
2) Open a webpage (any) in IE and see its view source.
Its just AMAZING!!
Huh, there was no different as I could se.
Could you maybe post a screenshot,
and show us whats happened.
LAWL.
Nice find.
Basically, when you click on view source, the notepad folder opens up instead of notepad.exe.
I guess it's another bug
microsoft? bugs? no, those are either undiscovered features or updates waiting to happen
Gonzo, that's what Bill says
yup..
very funny bug though...
Great work microsoft!!
Did you find it yourself or read it somewhere?
I think I need to trick some of my friends now.......

In other words..."It's not a bug, it's a feature!"
i cudnt se naything happening over there ... may b sm 1 upthere is right there should be a sequence of screenshots perhaps to let ppl see wats the actual bug or easter egg watever
Very nice!
Another instant shortcut for the lazy ones.
That's weird! It also works with a plain file named "notepad".
lol, what do bill gates then really spend the money on? candy to the men as make the bugs, lol
well this is a new security tip... for a big laugh
in the scource of your page: write
<--To read this scource, make a folder on your deskop named "notepad" . any other try to reach the scource file will make you infected with a trojan ,as not is knowen by antiviruses... yet-->
then 100 lines of enter
also warn about it on the site, lol
It appears that Internet Explorer is running (ShellExecute API) 'notepad' instead of 'notepad.exe'. This means that it looks in your path for a file OR FOLDER called 'Notepad'. It would probably also work if you had a folder in c:\windows called 'Notepad'.
Anyway, here's some screenshots if you can't get it working:
1) Create a folder and name it 'Notepad' (your desktop would be much cleaner than mine)
2) Open any web page in Internet Explorer, and click 'View Source'
3) The Notepad folder opens up, instead of Notepad opening!

Good one daniel15.
nice find.
I don't know if you would really call this a bug, but it's something that I had on my mind for awhile now.
One arrow in my taskbar, but two arrows in the properties window...
- Mike.
Awsome!
Now, perhaps you can put the text editor of your choice on the desktop, and name it notepad. Then when you do view source it will open in a different editor!

Just go to internet explorer --> tools --> options --> programs
It isn't so difficult.

Sure, you can do it that way, but what about the people that want to do it differently...
Hopefully, virus authors don't find out about this. What if someone puts a 'notepad.exe' file that's a virus on the desktop? Or in the system folder (the normal notepad is in the main Windows folder, I think)?

Actually, Ravi found it. I just made some screenshots.

That's an interesting find. Maybe the two arrows was from a beta or something? I find it interesting that on the 'Start Menu' tab, in the screenshot, the user's name is blurred out! And if you click 'Classic Start Menu', every menu item is blurred, as well as the My Computer, My Documents and My Network Places icons on the Desktop...
I remember looking through the Windows XP files using Resource Hacker... There are still some screenshots from the betas in some of the Windows XP files... shell32.dll, I think.
It actually has two.
Depends if you use the Windows Classic theme or soemthing else..
I use Windows Classic.
