Where would you put a WWW Directory (linux)

Possum
Hi

Where would you put your www folder on your Linux machine when you are creating a local site

When I installed LAMP it created a www in /var/

I really don't know how to move it so I'm leaving it there. But I do like to use the desktop. But that is just a habit I guess.

thank you

It doesn't really matter where it's located, it can be anywhere as long as the file and folder permissions are set correctly. If the web server runs as the user "nobody", then that user has to be able to read files from that directory.

If you want to change it, first create the directory where you want it, set the permissions of it and the files in it to what apache uses and finally edit the httpd.conf changing the directory in the "DocumentRoot" line and restarting apache.

Personally I just create a hard or symbolic link to the /var/www/ so it's just like it was there too.

ln -s /var/www ~/Desktop/www
or
ln /var/www ~/Desktop/www

Where ~/Desktop/ is your desktop and there's no file or directory named "www" beforehand there.
