Well i make my own html and my own PHP (php is taking me a long, hard time for me to learn and understand....stupid strings...) but i also use PHPBB, which is a great forum script and very easy to modify.

I use http://www.dotnetnuke.com and the project forums they have on their site. I went that route because I want to learn .net better. I also used http://www.communityserver.org for a bit. Both are great. Hosting costs a tiny bit more.

I'm a fervent supporter of lightweight forum software and thus a fervent adversary of large, heavy forum software. Most forums that are set up on the internet never pass the 100 users. But still, even admins of forums with 10 users just use phpBB or IPB etcetera. I think that's a waste, why not use small software for small forums? The only reason I can think of is that having a phpBB forum gives you status, especially if it's modded.

Anyway for that reason I'd recommend NavBoard: http://navarone.f2o.org
Note that when you're going to use v16 you probably have to fix this bug manually, but it's no big deal.

I prefer MyBB, as I feel that it has a more simple and aesthetic feel to it.

Although phpBB is great too. Smile

I'd stay away from InvisionFree or anything else that contains banners though.
