anyone here got any good bands to look up that you dont think many people have heard of, i found an australien band the other day called Wolfmother, they are ace!
another is a bit like nickelback, Theory of a Deadman.
My favorite band is an obscure Christian band called "Lost & Found". Their website is http://www.speedwood.com
They're unique because they've been playing music for over twenty years and touring nearly 150+ dates each year across North America and Germany. However, they're somewhat unknown by choice - they've shunned all attempts to be signed to a major label (Christian or otherwise) and they've always forged their own path. They call their type of music "speedwood" which is basically thrasing acoustic guitar, strong piano and their wacky voices. In terms of live concert experience, they are second to none in humor and execution. When you first hear an album you're like, "These people are professional musicians? You must be kidding." Yet, it grows on you and really is surprising when you see how charismatic they are in person. Check them out!
What about Divinefire? I belive there is some that have heard of them, but they are a christian Power-Metal badn from Sweeden, and were founded this year, 2005. They have allready relased two albums, Glory thy name, which can be downloaded at their homepage, http://www.divinefire.net, and Hero, which is not downloadable. Their music sounds like a mix of maiden, nightwish, hammerfall and some songs also like In Flames.
I'm not sure if they're as obscure as they seem, but though they've been around for a while, it took me until last year to hear of Lacuna Coil.
My favorite song by them has to be When a Dead Man Walks. Nice and dark.
Lacuna Coil are fairly well known.
Brothomstates and Strommoussheld, on the other hand...
This is a thread for me
Ambiossis -> http://www.ambiossis.nl Unknown dutch band
Zen -> http://www.zen-band.com Unknown Italian band
Guilty Method -> http://www.guiltymethod.com Unkown Italian band
Smogus -> http://www.smogus.com known in Holland, unknown outside Holland
There are just too many to post in here...
If anyone likes semi-folksy indy rock, check out David Dondero. He just came out with a new album called "South of the South", but maybe you should try and look for "The Transient" or "The Pity Party" first. They might not be easy to find, though.
...Mnemic, Rondellus, Zyklon, Mars de Grises...
Calabrese http://www.calabreserock.com
Susperia http://www.susperia.net/ (thier site seems to be down at the moment)
Strapping Young Lad http://www.strappingyounglad.com/
The Dillinger Escape Plan http://www.dillingerescapeplan.com/
Most Precious Blood http://www.mostpreciousblood.com/
As you can see, there is a 'range' of 'unknown' bands that I like.
Ps, don't visit thier sites with impressionable minds about, or at work. While I love the bands I listed, I can't say they're child- or boss-friendly.
...1349, Asgaroth, Battalion of Flies, Behemoth, Bloodbath, Carnal Forge...
I quite enjoy SYL. But I thought DEP were quite popular at one point.
Is it bad when you recognize "unknown" bands?
I just read a review of 1349's new disc, I was going to pick it up when I get some funds.
Replace unknown with underground. Then it's cool.
Personally I think the popularity of a band has much less to do with quality than exposure, particularly these days. There's a wealth of amazing "bands that no-ones heard of", but they just never get the breaks that others do.
On the other hand, bands such as 1349 and the rest of the death/black metal scene tend to deliberately shy away from the limelight. Stops them getting tainted by mainstream success I suppose.
Besides, it's much more rewarding to have to put effort into searching for CDs!

lol, so true. "What's this you're playing?" "Huh??"
has anyone heard of the postal serive
Well, here, Styx. Known to many people who were around during the time that they were popular, but if I know anything about this forum, very few of you have heard of them. I recommend you get a CD, they aren't too expensive and they are totally worth all the cash you pay.
I've heard of Styx. I grew up on classic rock.
I have heard of Styx as well.
Anyways, I don't know that many unknown artists, I know a couple kind-of-unknown artists.
Aphex Twin - This guy is an incredible electronic music artist (IDM). Anyone that is into electronic music has probably heard of him, but a lot of other people haven't.
Mindless Self Indulgence - These guys/girls are pretty popular too, they combine electronic music with punk/metal. Very System of A Down-ish.
lol, ive heard of styx too, classic rock is a good part of my musical diet
im not sure how many people here will know of him, probably most, but hes worth a mention anyway
frank zappa! if you dont have any of his stuff, dig some out
if you play guitar you will probably like mr big too, tho they are great regardless, worth a look, mr big rocked the 70s and 80s
Just a few of less known bands that I would recommend would be DeVotchka, Metric, and Glassjaw (there a little more well known then the other two)
Mindless Self Indulgence were great the one time I've seen them, opening for Korn in 2000 (I think).
glassJaw is/was very popular amongst the ladies. Well, semi-hardcore ladies that is.
I've only heard of Glasjaw and postal service out of all those.
Well, check the rest out then!
i'd recommend London After Midnight, burzum and Diary of dreams
fairly unknown to most people
I really agree with you fecundity with "theory of a deadmen" And "nickelback"
But I would add some others : "Breaking benjamin", "trapt", "Our lady peace"
