Packet Information

Possum
Hi

I have a computer on a network that seems to be sending and receiving packets when it should not be. ie when it is idle.

It is an XP computer.

Is there an app I can get to analysis this.

I know about Wire Shark. Do you think I should use Wireshark or is there another app

thank you!

You can use firewall to check the internet traffic.
I recommend Comodo firewall.
It has Network Activity features. It will help you to see what are the application sending/receiving packets across the network.

I agree with that move. Linux tends to have less unexpected network traffic, although it may do a lot of probing on the local network if it's set up to talk to Windows hosts. I'm pretty sure you can identify and control all network streams on Linux without a lot of black magic. It may be still take some effort to identify each stream though. You may still want to use wireshark or some other network monitor to be sure you haven't missed any.
