1000 mph car - Bloodhound

deanhills
Just came across this interesting international science and technology project for designing a 1000 mph car. Wonder where one would be able to travel 1000 mph in the globe - would take massive investment into major roads? Razz

The Bloodhound has been designed and constructed in the UK but with sponsorship and parts from international companies. It will be making its record attempts in South Africa during 2015/2016.

Here is more information about the preparation of the test track in Hakskeenpan, South Africa:

would indeet take massive investments into track building - there's that clips from speed cars on salt flats, where they take compareably moderate speeds, just some 200+ miles per hour, and if theres a little inconsistency like a little bump or too much gas, they just take off and crash...

Wow! Just imagine that happening at 1000 mph! Wonder whether the titanium wheels vs rubber ones would make any difference?

A 1000 MPH car for any practical purpose is not possible - and exactly that - you can't build any sort of roadway for the vehicles - they would have to be tubes - and if there were crashes no need to worry about survivors!!!

These things are just bragging rights and the fringe folks looking to see how fast they can drive on land - hell they were trying to break the speed of sound on land since the 1960's and never did it officially until 1997. Plus if you see the car? they did it in - it doesn't look like a commercially viable product Very Happy

Here is another one for you Bonneville Racing - the race out on the salt flats - they are pushing if not exceeding 300 MPH for extended runs - they have to make the front of the car supper heavy to be able to stay on the ground and have some sort of steering - Crazy stuff - but again nothing that would ever go on the road or be viable for transportation!

True. The current focus of the project is invested in building the road the car will be traveling on. Here is more on it:

As you said, it's not viable without tubes.

However, purpose of this project appears to be more in the means to the end than the end itself. It's a scientific project aimed at getting kids excited about science, math and engineering.

The BLOODHOUND Project is a global Engineering Adventure, using a 1000 mph World Land Speed Record attempt to inspire the next generation about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Objectives:

Inspire the next generation about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Share an iconic research and development programme with a global audience.
Set a new World Land Speed Record of 1000 mph.

Mission Statement:

Create a unique, high-technology project, focused around a 1000 mph World Land Speed Record attempt. Share this Engineering Adventure with a global audience and inspire the next generation by bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life in the most exciting way possible.

WOW - that is always a great thing to do - inspire kids to get involved in science. Science gets a bad rap by the kids these days as boring and hard, and who wants to work like that. It is things like this that show kids how cool science can be and how interesting it is to build machines that have specific purpose - like breaking the land speed record! I am all for that - seems like education is getting worse for the kids and not inspiring them to work in difficult but rewarding fields like Engineering, Physics, Math, Chemistry, and such.

Friend of mine - his son wanted to go into Engineering and was looking at Civil Engineering degree - I told him - buildings are cool, but the don't move, become an ME, they design things that move, and some of them quite fast!!!!
