China Against Text Messaging

The Chinese government last week issued new guidelines that seek to limit the use of cell phones for text messaging.

A circular issued by the Ministry of Public Security, the communist internal political police, stated that it is illegal to send short text messages that can have “massive influence.”

Chinese leaders fear text messaging could be used for pro-democracy and anti-communist political activities.

This is just hilarious. It's not merely the web anymore, now it's text messaging!

As to those Western Lefties who are fighting for the hand over of the internet to thuggish regimes such as china -- among others -- well, I say: keep it up and good luck, you freaking commies. Just remember that you will be among those who will dearly pay for your thoughtless actions.

This just shows that socialism/comunism is against progression in every shape and form, unless they are the ones who could possibly control it. Don't ever be let on that just because China is progressing into a fully industrialised country that the human rights issue and everything else that goes along with that will just fade away. They had no idea that the "west" even knew that Zhao Ziyang passed away and were literally surprised when a friend of mine showed up at the family's doorstep to pay his respects. They were pleased to know that we "the west" did not forget about them.

I've been working in China for the past 20 years. Actually the Chinese governament is only concerned on how to keep its power inalterated.
China is NOT a comunist country or let's say it is only when it comes to consider burocracy and state related issues. Everything that is economy related is now an extremist capitalism.

Text messaging or internet use , if do not dent political power is simply left alone. I guess Politicians here are more concerned with politics sensitve websites and blogs than sexual offensive ones.

I believe what biga57 said was largely true. I had lived in China for 10 years and I know how they work pretty well. They are definitely NOT what people originally thought were communists anymore. They are becoming a capitalist country; the fast increase in their economy proves that. I do agree that the government is pretty corrupted; the officials want to keep all the power to themselves, and that's where the whole internet/text messeging thing came from. It's not wholly about communism anymore, it's about power, and that's just pretty sad. Other than that, people are free to do what they want to, just as long as they don't interfere with the government's grab for power.

They worry about color revolution,so control freedom of news and talk.

but still....
why txt mssgs ? there are so many things to choose from, which are more 'dangerous' for the public's ' peace'

And wouldn't this damage the right of privacy ?

So, if I understand you well, what you are saying is that it is the progression [or should it be "regression"?] toward capitalism that is creating totalitarianism and violation of human rights in china?

Also, would you mind defining "capitalism" and "communism", just so I know what it is you're talking about?

Great thanks in advance.

Once China steals enough technology (or buys more from the next "democratic" president) they'll have the first actual thought police

what a scary thought.. oh I hope they won't find this.

I don't think it's possible, no matter how agressive the government, to actually have "thought polices." Humans are very strong willed creatures, and naturally wants freedom. As long as people have the will to be free, no governments can truly restrain them. Chinese people are very stubborn, and there will always be rebels. The government can never truly take our freedom away. Even if our physical bodies are restricted, the mind will always roam free, and people are willing to dream and hope.

Just to clearify, I consider communism as a system where goods are distributed equitably and the government controls state-owned means of production. Afterall, that is what communism started as in China, and that's why in the beginning people liked it. Back during the revolution, many people, under the Nationalists, were poor and starving to death, and the idea of sharing everything so that people can live equally seemed really good. Alas, nothing good lasts forever, and the system became more corrupt and ended up what it is today. (you probably didn't want to hear that rant, but whatever)
I consider capitalism to be a system in which the government allows privately owned business and corporations, and encourage free economy.

As to Resident Egoist's question, no, the change towards capitalism is not creating totalitarianism and violation of human rights in china. It's the greediness of humans. You don't see this much in the US because of the sharing of power between the different levels and branches of government. The worse people in China took advantage of Communism (as stated above, the idea is to make everyone share everything). Providing that humans are perfect little angels, communism would work out very well, but sadly that's not the case. The central government had lots of power because it controlled the economy and distrubtion of goods(at the beginning) and people began to set their eyes on these high level positions since they are in control.

Anyway, I'm not claiming in anyway that my words are 100% correct and is the way things are, they are simply my opinions from what I've gathered from living in China for 10 years. (there, I'm finally done rambling! I hope that helped at least somewhat! Very Happy )

And yet China has been ruled by fascism of one kind or another for about 8000 years...

There has NEVER been a pure communist government in THE HISTORY OF TIME.

well, like I said before, these are simply my thoughts, and I'm certainly not claiming that they are coreect. Many people might dissagree with me, and I respect their opinions too. Very Happy
