Attributes of a leader

chasbeen
Your in a room with other people. In this topic you describe the scenario.
The common theme is "Your in a room with other people". Here is mine.

Your attending a conference but you are not one of the speakers, nobody knows who you are. How do you show yourself as a "leader".

(1) Good eye contact with all and every individual during the course of the 2 day conference.
(2) When you start talking people are interested in what you "might" say.
(3) You have a louder voice than others and you get away with it without criticism.
(4) You make people laugh.
(5) Your opinions seem to be approved more readily with others.

You are a natural leader....

(1) By not trying to show yourself as a leader.
(2) You naturally radiate a self-confidence that attracts people to you
(3) You are comfortable and at ease, people like to talk to you
(4) You are an expert on the subject of the conference, and have really good questions to ask that lead to meaningful discussions where people want to seek you out after or in between sessions.

Funny I read this now. Just got done writing a paper for my leadership class.

So what makes a good leader?

  1. Someone who leads from the front.
  2. Someone who sticks up for his people
  3. Someone who makes sometimes the unpopular decision of his people
  4. A leader doesn't always have to have a title
  5. A good leader should not ever bull shit his way through something
  6. A good leader should know when s/he is in over their head and needs help
  7. A good leader should never be afraid to ask questions

I could go on for a long time with this topic but these are a few of the notes I feel are most important in a leader.

Excellent answer, Dean! Though in number 4, I would remove 'expert' and replace with knowledgeable. i.e prepared!

Good point with the wording Stand. Knowledgeable sounds better.

Brilliant topic!

A leader can be many things as people differ so much. Most people don't believe they can be leaders, but it is only a matter of time that they will be in a situation and see that they can actually lead in some way.

For me personally, the attributes of being a leader are as follows:

1. Knowledgeable, yet malleable to new ideas.
2. Approachable and Outgoing.
3. Assertive and Cunning.
4. Humble and Modest.
5. Concise and straight to the point.

Those are the 5 points/elements that I think are fundamental to pinpointing a leader or a person who has the drive to be a leader.

A good leader keeps his head under pressure. They have to be able to make quick decisions that affect a lot of people. He has to be able to live with the decisions that he makes too. He has to be able to think clearly and have a broad vision that affects the group. Usually the smaller people on the totem pole are more into the details of what's going on, but a good leader thinks more strategically and further in the future.

I love the Pyramid idea because it shows how to get to leader status as well as a suggested list. You can see why some people never reach the "pinnacle".

If I might suggest the route to success often has obstacles but some people never navigate around these.

Example:
You have a problem so you seek solace in alcohol...

The great leader is different to every person. But in general a leader that can give enthusiasm is good.
My idea of the basic skills is :
1. have kids
2. have had a sickness caused of stress

Then the leader has the background of common people problems.
