If people say they do not care about the suffering of others

JoryRFerrell
If people say they do not care about the suffering of others, or they say they do not care if others suffer so they can live more comfortably, do they deserve respect? Should other's be allowed to take advantage of that person?

People should be able to have whatever feelings and opinions they want (or don't want). Legally you shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of this person any more than with any other person.

Until recently I was suffering from a cracked tooth. Eating food was very painful. I went to an oral surgeon at a dental clinic to have the tooth removed to ease my suffering.

To my shock the dental clinic took advantage of me and my suffering by demanding that I give them a down payment, they didn't want to treat me to their services without being paid so they could live more comfortably. I don't know how they could do such a thing and still have any shred of respect as a business.

When the tooth was pulled and it was over, the down payment they took from me earlier wasn't enough. They ended up charging me a little more. They took advantage of me without any kind of dental insurance twice.

I don't know if any of them ever said that they did or didn't care about the suffering of others beforehand as it didn't seem like a good topic to bring up. I can assume that they didn't care because they made me leave the dental clinic in numbed up pain and bleeding from an empty tooth socket that is still a bit painful right now as the tissue needs to heal.

What kind of business takes money from people desperately needing a service that they provide?
How should I force them to stop taking advantage of the suffering of others?

I guess there just isn't any choice but to become their victim. The logical thing would have been to walk out, but then you were a hostage of a kind through the pain you were suffering.

I went through almost the exact same thing. Except in a more subtle way. I had to settle my bill in full after the fact, and only learned how much it was when I settled up after the procedure. I had a serious root issue, that needed to be treated. But this dentist found after he had opened up the tooth, that he did not quite have all the equipment he needed to do the procedure as it was not his dental office. So it got worse after that. He did not fill it with a temporary filling. So I left with a gaping whole in my mouth. He also prescribed a double dose of anti-biotics, real heavy going ones. So next thing I got violently ill from the anti-biotics. Like spontaneously. So not only did he not treat me for the real problem, but he created a greater one. And on top of everything charged me for every little bit of what he had done. This is when I went to a very expensive specialist in root canals. And lucked out. She had time for me. Didn't think about postponing anything and just got stuck in with treating the roots and I walked away with the first phase completed, and something that is usually problematic, as easy as pie. I was so impressed with the speed and energy of the whole thing, I even forgot how nauseous I was.

Bottom line. Dentists always have the advantage. Probably why they choose that career as well. Razz

I was not talking about businesses gouging customers, or unfairly high medical care prices. I was thinking more along the lines of 1st world countries stealing and/or manipulating weaker countries.
Do we have a right in America to claim human rights for ourselves, but then let our government murder innocent people over oil and "defense" contracts (which are more like "Offense" contracts consigned by the "Department of Offense" mind you...)?

well some might say that they don't care about others. specially when you don't know who is that someone. but when you know it, and you feel that he or she is innocent, then you will care about him, but if you feel that he is your enemy, then okay, suffer, die if you want.. But i guess it is better if we don't think or speak that way to others.. Smile

And what is the alternative? Dentists in the U.S. spend an average of a quarter million dollars ($250,000) to spend 8 years in school (after high school) so that they can gain their expertise. They also buy tools for tens of thousands of dollars, pay for a facility to use, hire staff (hygienists, receptionists, etc.) and you're angry that they're charging you for a service? Not only do they have to pay for all of that, but they have to make money for doing a job. It doesn't matter if the service is necessary (medical care) or unnecessary (waitress). The fact of the matter is that someone is performing a service and they need to get paid in order to do that service. My time isn't free and I won't just perform a service for free. I'm surveying right now and I guarantee that I won't survey your property for free. I like to eat and have a roof over my head.

Now to answer the original question: people in the 1st world buy cheap shit at Walmart because it comes from sweatshops in China. I used to have this idea of not buying Chinese products because of the injustice but I realized that these people in the factories would not have any other work. I do not like it - or think that it's fair - but since I cannot change it the best that I can do is donate money (that I've saved by buying cheap Chinese shit) to charities that I support that do try and make a difference.

I agree with you.

The actions define the people. What they say is not very important.
