Thomas Carlyle, in the French Revolution, wrote that the term "leftist" evolved during the French Assembly of 1789, when it became customary for the radicals and the revolutionaries to sit of the left of the presiding officer and censervative aristocrats sat to the right. Hence, those who favored sweeping social reforms were of the "left wing" of the assembly, while those who fought to maintain status quo were of the "right wing".
When I look at American style politics, the Republicans could be the left wingers at times because the Democrats historically are of the aristocratic lineage (Kennedy family) (Kerry family) (etc). Bill Clinton for instance when Bill Clinton wa presiding in office, the republicans were the radicals....
