Error on shutdown

steveadams617
I got the blue screen of death with this error for the second time on shutdown today. Had happened one other time last week:

NMI, Parity Check, Memory Parity Error.

Anyone know of any programs I could run (free) to check my memory? I know I could probably enable the check on startup on in the bios, but don't want to have to wait for it.

Is this a really bad thing or could my computer limp along for awhile?\

Thanks
Steve

Many linux distros come with a memtestx86 startup option, and that's what I always use.

If you can get to the point where you are ready to shut down the computer without problems, then you can definately limp along for a while.
If you have a warantee on your memmory, you should replace it ASAP.

sounds like a problem with your memory - download memtest for windows and check to see if your RAM has become corrupted.

Sometimes that happens to me with my PC at home. I don't think much of it, I leave my computer on all the time for weeks on end. I just think it needs to be rebooted. So that's what I do to get it to work, I power it off and power it back on and it turns up fine.

If you are using Win98 this will happen if you leave the PC on for a long time (days).

This is because 98 doesn't clear memory efficiently (if at all)!

Best thing to do is use WinXP Pro.
