if you are running a 64bit operating system, then only programs coded that are specifically 64bit can run. however there is also a mode where 32 bit programs will run in a 64bit environment. but it is the coder that has to do it. i dont think the user can do anything about it (please correct me if i am wrong)
if you are running a 64bit ver of linux, check out the site www.x86-64.org

i use 32bit Xp system.Thnx for your help but i cant solve it.
i dont think you will experience any problem using 32bit windows. ive been using it on my a64 system for more than 1 year without a single problem
and btw, can you specify which s/w you are finding hard to run. it may be specific to that alone

I also run 32 bit XP on an Athlon 64 and it has been fine for 18 months. I would like to get hold of a full set of 64 bit software tho to see if it makes any difference!! When is the new windows with 64 bit support due out?
No, you won't have trouble running 32 Bit Windows, I've been using my A64 for a long time now, and when I switched to 64 Bit Windows I noticed a lot of compatibility issues so I switched back to 32, the bottom line is:
As long as you're running 32, you should have no problem. All programs that my Intel P4 can run, my A64 can run just as well/better.

As far as I know the AMD 64 chips can emulate 32 bit easily without errors, but check out http://www.extended64.com and see if anyone else has a similar error.
