Gmail and Thunderbird 1.0.7 not get along?

I have Thunderbird 1.0.7, and gmail. Sometimes thunderbird says "no new messages" even when there are new messages on gmail. And there are several email addresses that I cannot send mail to. From my end it looks like it sends OK, but it never gets to the recipiant. Does anyone else have this problem? and know a fix? I cant use thunderbird 1.5 beta because Plaxo does not have an updated plugin for it.
