Should Ice Cream be free in the Summer?

chasbeen
Ice cream used to be free in the Summer when I was young(My parents used to buy it)
However it is so good that it should be given away free in some circumstances in the Summer
Eg Your employees should be given it if they have to work on hot days in the summer.

What other circumstances should people be given it?[/i]

Great idea! I remember when I was in the plane a couple or more years ago, and it was an hour or more after dinner, some people were sleeping, and the airline handed out a surprise ice cream treat "for free". Really great quality as well. Nothing like a surprise like that to make the day. Now if my employer could do that as well, as a surprise, would probably lift our spirits up from the very low morale. Couldn't be that expensive either.

The ice cream may be free to the person eating it, but it's not free to produce.

Who's paying for it?
standready
as ocalhoun said, someone is paying for it. Parents, boss ,company, etc.

I remember migrating to Australia on the boat and as we crossed the equator it was very hot so they would come round each day with a trolly and hand out free ice creams for the kids. We would wait for him on the first deck, get our free ice creams. eat them and still beat him onto the next deck for another one and so on. All good stuff when you are a kid.

Wait, what? if it was free, why did they have to buy it? o.0

But anyways, I think that would be a splendid idea, and would probably work better in a socialist/communist ruled place. (In 'murica we like remuneration for our "hard earned" work)

It can be free as part of employee's benefits. For example, there can be free ice-cream every week to reward employees or to make them happier. It might also encourage people to take up job offers.
Radar
I think from any sort of youthful perspective, that sounds amazing. Free icecream! What could possibly be wrong with that?

But sadly, as everyone seems to be saying, when you consider that from an adult perspective with concerns about how the world works, you start wondering where it comes from and why.

In some ways, this is reflective of the problems with the world as a whole.

Very Happy Maybe you can get free ice cream when hell freezes over Very Happy

Sure, if everyone was going to get free ice cream, those who makes them would now make any money.

So there shouldn't be anyone making them.

business means no free.

the cost from manufacturing demands people to make an ice cream if the demand is high and when the demand is high the cost of the production is also high, price is also high. this is business.
deanhills
Well if one surprised your employees now and then with something that makes them happy, like ice cream, morale goes higher, and output goes higher. So that could be regarded as good business too. An investment of X for an output of a higher Y.

I'd say key is surprise however, because as soon as it becomes a regular predictable event, then employees will come to expect it as a right, and start complaining about the quality or brand of the ice cream. The surprise should be legitimate to say thank you or something out of the ordinary.

I once got an email that there was free ice cream and pizza being given away in the reception where I used to work but I already had me lunch so I didn't want it,

Have you heard that Ben & Jerry's gives away a cone on April 9 every year for free? The purpose of this is to thank customers. This shows that it is possible for businesses to give things for free. Tipping a few cents would be appreciative for Ben & Jerry's generosity. Charity boxes would also appear for people to donate.

Quote:
Free Cone Day is on April 9th! So, make sure you swing by one of our participating Scoop Shops and grab yourself a FREE cone. Free Cone Day is something we’ve been doing since 1979 when Ben and Jerry celebrated their first year of business! Ben and Jerry wanted to thank everyone for their support in the best way they knew how; with free ice cream!

Now the reason I think free ice cream is not a good idea because you have to pay for it and then pay your employees on top of that. It's a waste of money double time and you might have to be the one cleaning up all the mess.
grofet
Not all people like free ice cream, so some employee will try to convert ice cream they got become money or gold/silver. They can request ice cream conversion directly to the company or sell it directly to other employee with cheap price to get money or gold/silver coin. Giving free ice cream on summer is not a good idea i think.

Not sure about this, but I do know that Dairy Queen always makes blizzards buy one get one free on snow days in Kentucky. I think this is the same in most states, but not Canada! Smile

Asking this question is like asking if beer is free at October fest. It doesn't make much sense. And it's not free if your parents bought it.

We have so many celebration days in the year (like friendship day, Rose day etc), so why can't we have an ice cream day? The ice-cream companies should be given their business license on basis of this condition that they would serve ice-cream free (for certain hours of the day) on ice-cream day.
Also there should be happy hour for every ice-cream parlor when they should be available at half or quarter price of the regular one. Very Happy

I wonder if Dairy Queen ships outside the US. Well, they deserve their ice cream cake, and eat it too as well as us!

Not true. Dairy Queen is in the Middle East as well. They started with Saudi first, but there are a few franchises already in Dubai as well. Here's an announcement in 2010 to give you an idea of their strategy:

Next time I see a franchise I really need to try their ice cream in the Middle East. Dairy Queen used to be one of my favourite ice cream vendors in Canada.

Well, you learn something every day. Dairy Queen is in 17 countries outside the US. I guess people all over the world can have their ice cream cake, and eat it too! Smile

True. Baskin Robins has been here for ages, and since I prefer Dairy Queen, am glad they're going to spice up the competition here. However, since its absence around for many years, and not being particularly partial to Baskin Robins, have developed a liking for Italian Gelato:

Umm.. Dean!! Thanks for posting such delicious photo Dancing BTW, Baskin Robins is also available in India and they are really good. They also have exclusive BR parlor in several shopping malls. However, Dairy Queen is still not available here.

I miss lemon ice in Germany. It's more of a frozen lemonade than a creamy lemon flavored ice cream. Gelato is great though. I've seen advertisements on TV here in KY where they are starting to make it available even here.

Dairy Queen is missing from the Uk but thats not going to make me move back to Canada

It would be wonderful if ice cream and cold drinks, especially the ones made with lime/lemon, are offered free of cost to customers during summer months. The companies can offer smaller sample packs free or maybe offer schemes such as ``buy one--get one free.''
