Get a free UK phone number from VoipCheap

aardvark
For a while it has been possible to make free phone calls to UK landlines using the software client supplied by VoipCheap (www.voipcheap.com). They have now added free UK phone numbers (starting 01 or 02) so that you can accept incoming calls (via your PC) too.

Sound quality isn't perfect but hey - it's free!

There used to be quite a long list of countries you could call free from VoipCheap. Now it's down to just the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Portugal. So I'm guessing free calls won't last for ever.

Voipbuster (voipbuster.com) is a sister company to voipcheap with similar rates. It has a different list of free countries for landline phone calls namely:

Austria
Denmark
Finland
Germany
Greece
Ireland
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Norway
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United States

Not you will notice the UK.

Does that mean that if I'm in another country I can ring free to a UK number?

Yes it does. You can be anywhere.

I've had a look at the site now and it seems I have to pay to sign up :(. How long have you been using their service, what do you think of it?

You do need to credit your account if you want to make calls longer than a minute. When I joined you only had to put in 1. It is now 10 but if you stick to the free countries your 10 will not be eaten into.

I use a USB phone (about 10 on eBay) and it works just fine.

The list of countries for free calls has just been extended. It is now

Australia
Belgium
Denmark
Finland
Germany
Greece
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Portugal
Spain
Sweden
Taiwan
United Kingdom
United States
I use a USB phone
I have never understood why you would want to use a traditional phone when talking via Internet. I think that one of the great advantages is that I can use my best stereo headphones and the PC microphone to communicate. I don't have to hold a phone to my ear (I can surf the net or do other things at the same time)

Well I've tried both and, perhaps surprisingly, found the USB handset to be more reliable in terms of sound volume and quality than a headset and mike which seemed to be very sensitive to exactly where the microphone was placed.
