Hornblower is a series of books by CS Forester about a man named Horatio Hornblower who joins the royal navy during the french revolution. It follows his progress up the ranks and the obsticles that get in his way. It was one of the best reads for me for a long time and the TV series was superb also.

I saw the tv series and then read the five books in my library. I suppose he wrote more of them, but the 
library doesn't have them.
