There are many folks doing research in lottery every day, but if lottery is totally random, why do they do the research? Does that make sense? What's the point? Question Confused Confused Cool

Its a difficult qustion to answer that its rigged or not. you have to work there . Cause theres no evidence.

Of course there are lots of lotteries out there so some lottery somewhere might be rigged.

If you are asking about things like state lotteries; they would be very hard to rig. Big lotteries hire outside auditors to keep everything on the up and up.

I think it's important that some people research randomness of lotteries, just to keep them honest. Of course the large lotteries will generally police themselves and use outside auditors, but even these would have their reputation hurt if some lotteries started getting away with deliberate corruption or if their random number generator was faulty leading to them being predictable.

I know if one major case where a "lottery" was non-random due to an honest mistake, and it created a great deal of controversy. In the late 1960s the US government decided to use a random method for choosing who would serve in the Armed Forces. They called it a lottery, and they selected the order in which people with each birth date would be called up. Apparently the random element was placement of physical balls, like in a typical bingo setup. It turned out that the numbers 1 through 365 had been inserted in sequence initially, and they were stirred enough to satisfy the officials, but a significant stastistical bias was shown in the actual drawing.

They are almost random.

Anyway even if you find a non-randomness fault you need to invest a lot of money, you have more probabilities but only a little more.

The best option is to invest in old style lotteries (like lotto6/49, or any that accept combined bets and with few possiblites). They were designed many years ago, when they didn't expect that people could invest $100000 betting.

My thing I think thats it's rigged, idk how but thats what I think.

Lottery, Gambling, cards etc are the source of a major branch in mathematics- PROBABILITY. From ancient time itself , people tried to predict the outcome of uncertainty. The lottery is usually random but certain additional rules can be imposed ( Like , not to get all the prizes from the same series..). Of course there are " Manipulated" lotteries but those are different stories.

Honestly the odds of winning are so low that it doesn't need to be. They still make plenty of money even when they have to pay out.

Sometimes I wish I could own a casino or lottery--it's pretty much a guaranteed cash stream.

I agree Badai. Research usually happens when one doesn't have the answer, more like one is searching for an answer. It's a good way of testing whether the number is as random as the organizers claim it to be. I'd imagine though if someone does find the answer that they'd keep quiet about it? Twisted Evil

They are generally very random.

...but there are a few things you can do to improve your odds.

For one, choose numbers that couldn't possibly represent a date.
Many people play anniversary/birthday dates as their numbers, so if you pick numbers that can't be a date, you decrease the likelihood that you'll have to share a prize if you win.

Lotteries are random. Superstitions such as choosing certain numbers cannot work. Neither highlighting the edges of your paper or trying to put perfume would work to attract the judge. This is unless the organizer is biased which would be no different from being scammed.

Lottery have a lot of probability, so there are many looser and less winner. It's very difficult to guess what number will come. Lottery is gambling that only based on luck aspect. The game only profitable for the lottery company and some lucky winner. Gambling is totally sin in my religion.

I ve seen fraud and crime on lottery cases. So in some occasions it is not random. Laughing

It's practically the same as Insurance I suppose. One difference though is that you can buy several tickets whereas in Insurance you can get only "one" ticket i.e. one insurance.

You have a bigger probability to be run by a car when you are going across a street than to win in lottery.

What is random to you? Probability totally equaled? well the probability for that is zilch! Equaled probability within a tolerance is what it is...

If you believe that every single event in the universe is of some significance (eg. flap of a butterfly hehehe) then it is more that most surely sure that the outcome of every single lottery is intended to be as it is... But, if you'r3e talking about it being rigged, then, I'd catch the sons of guns and have them shot in front of a professional firing squad Wink

Payout < Total Money Income

That's the basic starting point of their game. Then they further increase their chances by giving you astronomical odds at actually winning, and overall astronomical odds that anyone will win. They only hope for a winning every once in a while to make the news, so that their scam can continue.

I've enjoyed reading your comments, and personally IF I play the lottery I'm doing what was suggested and that's to pick a non-date number, so I don't have to share it. Plus, IF it's rigged, then why would they pick a date number as that is a likely hit.

I've heard that it's good to always play the same number if you are going to play (I read that somewhere), and quit when a big win comes your way. Like anything at the casino or otherwise it's good to quit while you're ahead.

BTW, I'm going to search how many date numbers have hit in my local area, and report: kentucky lotto

Computer selected numbers are not random because there is a definite way of generating random numbers in computer. An algorithm that generate random number is fixed.

A true random event would be selecting one ticket for a pile of paper/ticket after random shuffling.

Gambling (lottery) world is unpredictable. It's very possible everything is set up by conspiracy (cheating the result). For me, to get rich is be an entrepreneur and create a lot of creative business. For me, gambling only makes people poor.

True, computer-generated "random" numbers are totally predictable if selected by an algorithm. At a minimum you need an unpredictable starting point in order to get any appearance of randomness at all. It used to be most computer random-number generators started with the date and time as a starting point. The sequence generated by the algorithm was completely deterministic if you knew the starting point, but the numbers had enough random-like behavior for most practical purposes.

Today with encryption needs, these pseudo-random numbers are no longer good enough. Every operating system records some information like mouse movement or disk seek time variations which are presumed to be totally unpredictable, and mixes this with a good pseudo-random algorithm to ensure no one can crack the keys.

I gave up on lottery when I heard that you have to be hit by a lightning flash three times before winning the jackpot. Laughing
No, seriously, I am not a lottery person. In German you can play 6 out of 49 and many people invest a lot of effort to come up with THE collection of numbers. 1,2,3,4,5,6 is as likely as any other. Now think about it how likely it is to get 1,2,3,4,5,6 out of [1..49]. Shocked

Everything that there is no sign of human in it is random but anything you see any sign of human in it is not completely random, even random numbers that softwares like Matlab create is not completely random, we know that many things like the weather of next day is random but as our doings will affect it so we can not tell it is completely random.

So of course lottery is not completely random but if there is no cheating and no one changes the result and they use usual random generators for announcing the winners then we can call it "Random" ! just like we call many things.

I don't think its a random task, why would people give money for free
just for small amount lottery tickets.
I think its already fixed whom to win.
victoria10024
I don't believe you should generalize. I've hosted an advertising campaign once with a raffle. As far I can say, it was pretty random. The thing is that the company made a lot more then they gave away. But there was a winner.
Nick2008
I believe lotteries in general are pretty random. Any sort of patterns or trends are most likely coincidental and probably won't increase your chances of winning if you follow them.
ratanegra
Nothing is totally random. Everything has a certain reason (weight, length, direction, mass, whatever ever happens is due to some reason, even if it is the littlest and least known (or most obvious).
