Probably biting off more than I can chew

Apparently Stickam.com is closing it's doors tonight. Thing is, I have a group of people who regularly meet up (there is about 80 people in the group but only ever about 10-15 max on in any one go).

I was thinking about setting up a single private chat room for these people to meet as we currently do. It will not be open to hosting other chat rooms or uninvited people.

Now I'm still relatively new at website building and coding and all that, but I went to ask a few questions.

From reading the TOS for frihost, I presume this type of script would come under the IRC band - making it not allowed on my website. Is this correct? If so, are you able to recommend hosting (does not have to be free, but cheap would be good) to do so.

Would you be able to point me in a good starting point to learn how to do such a thing too Razz

Thanks in advance.

Caroline.

Hi, there are many free chat services looking around, and they allow you to simply copy/paste an IFRAME / script in your website in order to view the chat in your page.
Check for example: http://www.chatango.com/

Hello Sabbadon, I am specifically looking for group video chat (like previously provided by Stickam). Unfortunately I don't think it's going to be a job that I can take on for the group. I don't think that I'll be able to set it up within TOS conditions for Frihost and then outside of that it's going to be an expensive exercise. But I was looking into it.

I was curious about the site and its features. I was able to find posts about it on techcrunch, http://techcrunch.com/tag/stickam/. The site message sounds like they considered themselves a community of users, but I get the idea it was primarily profit motivated and that didn't work out. Possible alternatives like Justin.tv and Ustream are mentioned, but I'm willing to bet none of these provide free group streaming. It seems that stickam encouraged teen use, yet the owners were connected with porn sites.

I know little about video chat sites. I would be interested in hearing more about them, and about what options are available, even though most of them are likely priced too high to consider using.

I'm not a Skype user myself, but I know of friends who are in chat communication with Skype by messaging/chatting in a group setting. Since Skype could act as a video, am wondering whether with its video capability one would be able to do a group video chat as well with Skype. About every one I know is on Skype these days. Except me so far as it's blocked by our local telecommunications provider. There are ways to get past it for me, but haven't felt a compelling need to go for Skype yet.

We don't allow our hosting to be used for an irc server (the actual server). So that gives you 2 possibilities for chatting here:

You can do chat without irc, most likely with php. Just take care it doesn't require too many server resources.

You can use an irc server that you get somewhere else. I suppose there are a lot of free services that provide an irc server account. And then you can use a flash client for it on your website (or maybe an ajax client). As long as our servers don't have anything to do with irc (it's forbidden by most datacenters), it's ok.

I believe an IRC supporting virtual private server can work for you. Check lowendbox.com for nice VPS offers and grab one which allows IRC.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and ideas. We're still looking into ideas. I don't think I understand enough about web design and stuff so will probably palm the job off to someone else who knows better.

We did look into Skype, but it appears that there will be a cost involved in running group chat that not everyone can afford.. will look into it further though.

I know this is an older thread and you've probably come up with a solution already but I'm going to throw this out there anyway...

Oh, and worse than that, I don't even know if I'm right because I haven't tried it, but I've heard it from multiple sources so..

It may be true, I've heard that it IS, that with google+ you can videochat with all members of a circle (a group designated by you or others which can be public or private). And it's free.

And now I'm going to have to go find out if I'm right Smile
