Why cant the mass media get it right?

Slammer
The term 'hacker' is widely used today. But in the COMPLETELY wrong context.

A hacker is merely someone who has a large interest in computers/programming/hardware/networking etc. All the geeky stuff basically.

A cracker is someone who enters systems without permission with intent to cause damage or steal data.

So why is it that everyone uses the wrong terms? Its always on teh news 'hackers' have done this, that and the next thing. I am technically a 'hacker', im a programmer with computers playing a big part inmy life. Im not bad and evil like the media make out to be. Thats crackers.

Hackers - hack things to together
Crackers- Crack them open again.

The probable reason for this is that there are other definitions for "cracker"

example:
-Old school Southern redneck: cracks whips.
Nameless
You don't hack things together! To hack something is, by definition, making something uenven, breaking it apart etc. Look it up in a dictionary.

By reading the thread title before actually going through your actual post, I thought this thread would have been about Floppies/CD's/DVD's/etc. Laughing One term that many people use around me all the time use is "Script Kiddies", not too sure if anyone heard of that term before.
