delegate is kind of function pointer in c, c++ but more abstracted.

.net is a good start. or Java. Either one are used in the industry.

Currently in school, we are learning visual basic 6 and . net... they are good beginer launuages, but for more advaced programs, you shoudl consider java... for starting codes for visual basic.net you can search for any and copy directly from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/
hope you have fun with it ;D

In my humble opinion of the two C # has many benefits:

Firstly: at least you are starting with code that looks something like C++ and there should be a fairly easy progression to it.

Secondly: It has nice curly brackets

However: VB.Net, C# .Net compile to exactly the same code in the .Net runtime engine so it is fairly academic.

Yeah, I beg to agree. If you want to be a hardcore programmer. First, learn C++ 3.0 (Borland, DOS IDE of it) and it'll teach you the core fundamentals in all the 3rd and 4th generation programming languages that are in the market. After engaging yourself into it, all other languages such as Java and .NET, PHP, ASP would be just a one step away. Wink

VB.Net is much more powerful than Java in most situations!

However, if you're looking to get a job, java and c++ are the ones you'll most likely need. However, if you're new to programming, something like VB is easier to learn the core concepts with.
