Turn Old Computer into Media Player

Possum
Hi

I have an old computer that I want to use as a media player.

I use DownloadHelper to watch Youtube videos alot and would like to organize these. Also my eyes aren't too good and would appreciate larger text or even graphics.

Any advice please ...

.thx

i have an old PC that i used as media player.

if you know, there is media player that you can hook up to TV and have hardisk, or you can connect hardisk to it and can play multiple format.

so instead of buying that device, i use an old pc with hdmi output to connect it to my pc

pro:
zero cost
can install/update all codec that ever exist whenever needed

con:
big
use more electricity

the how to is basically
1. know how to identify good codec (there is a lot of bad codec out there)
2. know how to hook up it to TV
Josso
Pretty much what badai said, you can get DVI > HDMI connectors dirt cheap. Depends on how old the machine is though you may struggle with 480p and above.

this is more of a converter than a player. and you need a smart tv to connect to it.

i'm sure the OP is not looking for expensive solution, hence the mention of old PC. and you are so sure that an old PC manage to run this. my new PC not even DLNA certified.

And yes, i think his old PC can handle at least some of these with no problem.

Have you tried XBMCbuntu?

Take a look here:

I'm more experienced in Linux so I build my media center with ubuntu minimal, and from that base I then installed Openbox, tint2, and iDesk, overall a mere 100MB ram occupied and ready to boast some movies to my HDTV.
