Someone correct me if I am wrong (not an expert by any means, but I will answer your questions one by one:

Q1. Are they indexed by search engines?
A. Most are indexed by the majority of search engines, however there has been a case in 2011 where Google removed all 11 million subdomains of co.cc from their indexes, due to the huge amount of spam or phishing websites on co.cc subdomains. Search Google about this for more details.

Q2. Are they fast?
A. There is a slight effect, since the root server has to query the free subdomain (or domain in the case of dot.tk) provider before querying your own nameserver, but the effect can vary due to server speed/usage, from negligible to noticeable. Also, if you are using their own DNS service/nameservers, you will experience more delay (typically very slow servers used, as well as a lot of people using that server).

Q3. Are they reliable/still there?
A. That can vary, as different providers are more reliable than others. Remember that they can come and go at any time, whether you or the websites' owners want to or not. Also, even if they do not shut their doors, they have the right (or they have a clause in their terms and conditions that allows them) to remove your subdomain/domain at any time, for any reason whatsoever.

This includes (but is not limited to): spam/pornography/phishing schemes on your website, cost cutting, illegal activities, the company or an employee of the company that hates you, overusage of resources, at random, not complying with a minimum usage policy (if applicable), any other reason that they pull out of their terms and conditions and/or acceptable usage policy.

There are still quite a few around, however I would recommend using the subdomain that is included with your Frihost account, using a free subdomain provider that has been around for more than 5 years and has mostly positive reviews (e.g. only the administrator's domains from freedns.afraid.org), or simply buying your own domain to use. Note that I would not recommend using the free domains from dot.tk at all for any use, personal or business.

Q4. Will Google give a 1st page rank to them?
A. There may or may not be a effect (positive or negative) to your PageRank due to you using a free subdomain, however there is almost no (i.e. I have never seen it in my time) positive effects to your PageRank due to your usage of a free subdomain. There can be a lot of negative effects though due to using a free subdomain, some of which have been outlined already. If your free subdomain suddenly is gone for whatever reason, you lose all of your links which you could have possibly built up over a long time, rendering your efforts useless. As well, you could be subject to something similar to what happened to co.cc users in mid 2011, as described above.

Having said that though, it is much more important to focus on how your website is structured and the type and quality of your content on your website rather than what type of subdomain that you use (although getting a paid domain is more likely to secure your PageRank long into the future). I won't go into details of good Search Engine Optimisation though, as there is already a lot of info about this (it's also much too longs, it's slightly off topic, and I have some secrets close to my heart that I'd rather not share).

Q5. Why are they used, and do you recommend them?
A. People use these free subdomains as they look better (and give the impression of a serious website) to many people who are not informed of the facts that many ccTLDs don't have a exclusive 2LD (e.g. .com.[ccTLD], .net.[ccTLD], .co.[ccTLD], etc.), or simply because that they are easier to remember. For the same reasons that I outlined before, I would not recommend using these subdomains that claim to be "real" domains, such as co.cc, cu.cc, dot.tk, etc.

Q5. Who funds these companies, and what are their goals?
A. Generally their goal is to collect revenue by providing free domains. This system works by:
  1. Only allowing URL forwarding, so they are able to place ad banners on your websites for money;
  2. They get publicity from providing these "free" subdomains/domains, which attracts people to buy premium subdomains/domains which accounts for much of the revenue of the company;
  3. Companies wish to secure their subdomain/domain so they pay the company money to keep the subdomain/domain they want theirs; and/or
  4. When a subdomain/domain is inactive (or for any other reason that the company makes up), it is parked. This generates ad revenue as people who wish to view the website that they typed into their browser will instead meet a page full of advertisements.

I'm sure I missed a few but those are the main methods of creating revenue. BV Dot TK's parent company, Freedom Registry (or so they claim) has some more details about how their method of collecting revenue works. For the very few others that may have only free offerings, they might just be generous temporarily if they have excess space on a server, or they are simply too nice. Usually though, the generous person runs out of money, a situation arises or it's simply too good to be true.

Q6. Are the companies behind these "free domains” real companies?
A. It depends on the situation. Usually though, it is either a real company, an individual trader, or it is simply a scam waiting for people to fall victim too. However, this does not affect the message that I have iterated many times. Either use the subdomain that Frihost (or any other reliable web host/subdomain provider with a long history or is known to be excellent) provides, or save up the very small amount of money (or Frihost coins Very Happy) to get an actual paid domain. I hope that this helps you with your decision.
