Old school horror fiction

microkosm
Anyone have any recommendations for "classic" horror novels? I just finished reading Carmilla and The Great God Pan and I really enjoyed the mood and atmosphere the authors invoked.

For those interested in a vampire story in the style of the original Dracula, give Carmilla a read. It definitely has that gothic romanticism feel to it since it was written in the 19th century but involves a female vampire. The Great God Pan is interesting because the titular character is only ever alluded to. It reminded me of Cthulhu in the sense of a mythic and godlike menace in the dreams and shadows of humanity. It was actually the inspiration for the movie Pan's Labyrinth.

Actually, I'm thinking I might check out the Cthulhu mythos now. Let me know if anyone has other recommendations.

Edit: OK, not too many fans of the horror genre here. In that case nothing to see, move along.
