Spam Monitors/Generals

darthrevan
As deanhills has mentioned, it would be nice to have more control over spam that is happening on this forum. The idea that was brought up would be that if the people in the "Spam Monitors/Generals" find spam, they can send it to quarantine and a Moderator would see it in the quarantine bin and either let the message go back to the forum(if it isn't spam) or permanently delete it. Even if the Mods isn't active, atleast the suspecting spam is no longer on the board.

That's really awesome idea. I support it.
RosenCruz
I support this suggestion too

Who is the people in the "Spam Monitors/Generals"? You mean moderators, or regular users?

in definition it would need to be active users and they would have access to send posts to a spam bin and then the mods make sure the posts in that bin are spam or not and do what needs to be done to them. So in reality they would be, in terms of level, below mods.

When I came up with the idea (as fun originally) I thought to take the number of posts as a guide, i.e. all those above 2000 at the discretion of Bondings and the Mods. Can't remember which thread it was, we've had so many different varieties of anti-spam threads, and off-topic discussions about spam posts. I somehow recollect that it was not that favourably received by the mods who had been involved in the discussion at that time.

Yeah, I think it would need to be more selective than post count too. Individual merit would seem to be the way to go, not something arbitrary like volume of contribution; i.e. hand selected individuals.
darthrevan
Usually it is the people with the lower counts that are POSSIBLE spammers. Sometimes you will find some posts by high-posters seldomly.

If this could be coded I would help out with it,I don't have the time to be a moderator as I have my own forum to run,but just sending spam to the can is just as easy as reporting spam.

Absolutely! I'd think it would take a load off Mods too, especially from a timing point of view, there would be less of a need to have a 24-hour moderator coverage (in the event of porn spam etc).

Sort of like a 1st line spamcan? Like the idea. I would be up for that I report loads of spam

The problem is also that the spammer needs to be banned as in a lot of cases they post more than one spam post. Just spamcanning/quarantineing a post is not enough. The movie spammers post about 3 posts and some other spammers can post tens of posts, although those are pretty rare luckily.

I don't think this is a problem. If some "SUBMODERATOR" see SPAM he/she can just click on poster's name and find out all posts in few minutes. Isn't it? Maybe you can also create script for blocking any new post from user who have more then three post in spamcanning/quarantineing.

Yeah the spammer may would need to be banned though sometimes they post and leave. Maybe if we quarantine so many posts it would ban them if the posts are within a certain time frame? Spam gets ridiculous and we need active people to control them.

Maybe we need more active mods if this can't be done, though I believe it would be possible. Most spammers just post and leave as well.

I like that,if it can be coded this should be done,I don't think anyone would have a problem going through a new users posts and canning all his posts individually.

It may be a good idea but this feature could be abused by putting non-spam posts into the spam bin.

Which is why it is a quarantine and not a final bin. To pick up on stuff like that if and when it happens. The Mods would still be the people who would check through that bin. Spam Generals would only be the facilitators. To get the spam out of the forum as soon as possible so that people won't respond to spam or if it s serious porn, it won't be available for public viewing.

Like deanhills pointed out this is not last step of SPAM control. The Mods have last word and they can bring back or delete forever any post from quarantine. Also, they can see if some guardian is too hard and warn him/her about his/hers over protecting or even more revoke guardian rights.

I prefer the idea that if two or more people report the same post, it is automatically hidden until a moderator approves it.

This is a big concern, but still, initial hiding of the posts would help reduce the appearance of spam to the end users, and as long as reports are still generated, moderators will still be aware of the spammers and can ban them.

...And speaking of spammers... maybe consider trying a question-and-answer captcha, for say, a week, and see how that affects spam levels?
When my forum began to be spammed, I switched to that type of captcha and the spam stopped entirely. Not a single one got through.
Sure, it may or may not work on human-augmented spammers, but it might be worth an experiment.

I agree. Just do something with the registration set up for a week to test.

How long has it been since we've upgraded the registration process? If we haven't at all in the past few years, its obvious we need to.

Personally I think tackling an idea on how to reduce spam should be one of the absolute top priorities.
Ankhanu
Aye, I use a simple question/answer captcha on my forum; I've had maybe half a dozen or so spammers get through since about 2006. Of course, it's also a much lower traffic/profile forum than Frih, so that's part of it, but, even an empty forum will be overrun with spam without something in place.
