Why PHP so more popular in the web rather than other languages?
honken
There are plenty of reasons to why its so popular.

I would say a few things that i believe its so popular is because.

1. Its open source.
2. It came in a time when the web was expanding like crazy.
3. Can be run on just about any operating system (at least now days).
4. Supports a lot of different databases etc.

These are the first reasons i could think of.

Cheers.

WAMP or XAMPP

although this is right, but not what makes php unique.
there are many reasons why php is so popular:
1. Free
as an open-source language, there are many free PHP tutorials available online.
2. Easy
well, many people thinks so.
3. And In my opinion, the popularity of php-based CMSs like wordpress, joomla, drupal also make a contribution.

I guess you are right..

php is easy to use and well supported with many packages and free applications who's code you can copy and use..

Yep I agree with this. Also it seems to me that more people choose PHP over Microsoft's ASP

I think PHP is popular because of it's lightweight for servers.
JSP, Java framewroks, Java libraries are more powerful, but that will use more resource of the server, and its performance is not so easy to tune.

There are some free JSP web-hosting few years ago, but now they're most gone.
The rest providers I found in 2012 are not able to provide enough server quality.

In the end, all new websites can only be developed in PHP,
because there are only PHP web-hosting servers left.

It's Free, Working fast, Easy language, ...
venkat_60
because it's a free open source which can be learnt and used easily and fast.
if we use others like .NET to make a site we have to have licences for using that and makin a site using other's is little harder and time taking .

So, we prefer PHP than any other ...........

1. PHP can run on any linux or windows machine that runs Apache and doesn't have any dependencies towards a framework, ASP on the other hand runs on the .net framework.
(you can run ASP on a linux machine but you will be getting more then you bargained for)

2. you can customize PHP to fit your needs by modifying the source code and compiling it.

3. for websites it is cheaper to have a linux webserver then it is to have a windows server.

4. you don't need a fancy IDE to write PHP code. a text-editor with syntax highlighting is more then enough.

EDIT: I've left out other web programming technologies like JSP because I simply have NO experience with them what so ever

The very first programming language one learn's is the hardest. once you understand the basics of programming the other languages are easier.

I think I am just as curious as the original poster when it comes to questioning the expansion of PHP.

I have to admit I don't know how to program in PHP, and my first contact with it was with Joomla's preinstallment requirement. I am a good programmer and as far as Joomla is concerned, I am beginning to appreciate the new direction website building is moving away from hardcoding every small detail to module management - there is just enough flexibility and creativity in CMS to warrant my change from HTML coding to using Joomla!
