How to copy threads from a phpBB Forum legitimately

deanhills
OK this is a question for specialists in phpBB Forums - Version 3. I tried the phpBB Community Forum but did not come up with any good results.

I have a friend at another phpBB Forum who made a great contribution in three very long threads. He decided to leave the forum, but would like to be able to have copies of those threads so he can incorporate and continue the discussions in his own Forum. He does have permission from the Admin of the forum to have those copied. But the Admin of that forum says that the only way they can be copied is individual copy and paste of all of the posts. As far as the Admin knows, it is not possible to make a back-up of individual threads, only of the whole of the Forum. This is not a practical option as it would take a million years to copy and paste the posts in the threads as they are very LONG threads. Does any one know of another legitimate way that the threads could be packaged/copied/exported and imported into a different Forum?

I guess a special crawler can do that. This can crawl and copy all images, posts of a forum. People mostly use these stuff to move their forums from free forum hosts to a self owned database.

The forum software probably has some sort of database (MySQL?). It would be fairly simple to run a query on that database directly that gives back all the posts of those threads. You will need to have access to the database of course but with an admin on your side, it shouldn't be a problem.

With that (raw) data you can insert it into your own database using another query.

Of course, there are going to be some problems if you just insert it into your database. (Invalid ID's,...) But nothing that can't be fixed with some coding.

It would probably be better though if you just put a hyperlink in the topic start referring to the original topic so other people can catch up before reading the topic. Not sure why this isn't a valid option? (Maybe the threads can only be viewed by members of the forum?)

You could also just save all the HTML-pages from those topics, upload them to your own server and link to them in the topic start.
