Greenland icecap is growing, BUT...

...somehow that's further proof of global warming?

Greenland's icecap has thickened slightly in recent years despite wide predictions of a thaw triggered by global warming, a team of scientists says.

The 3,000-metre thick icecap is a key concern in debates about climate change because a total melt would raise world sea levels by about seven metres.

Satellite measurements showed that more snow was falling and thickening the icecap, especially at high altitudes, according to the report in the journal Science.

Glaciers at sea level have been retreating fast because of a warming climate, making many other scientists believe the entire icecap was thinning.

"The overall ice thickness changes are ... approximately plus 5 cms a year or 54 cms over 11 years," according to the experts at Norwegian, Russian and US institutes led by Ola Johannessen at the Mohn Sverdrup centre for Global Ocean Studies and Operational Oceanography in Norway.

However, they said that the thickening seemed consistent with theories of global warming, blamed by most experts on a build-up of heat-trapping gases from burning fossil fuels in power plants, factories and cars.

I swear, we could have another ice age and these folks would blame it on global warming.

S3nd K3ys, I'm not going to debate whether there is a global warming or not. But things are rarely what they seem to be on first sight.

The only thing I can tell you, is that the colder it gets, the less it snows.

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, driest continent on the plant.

This means that a higher temperature does result in more snow on average.

Just to give you an other example as I noticed you have a nice Suzuki motorcycle. Apparantly, if you turn your steering bar slightly to the left ... you go to the right.

If you don't believe me, try it out on a normal bike (less dangerous) without holding the handlebar. Then slightly pull it to the left with one hand. This causes you to bend over to the right, creating a netto moment which makes you turn to the right. At least it did for me. Wink

That's called counter-stearing. I've been doing it for about 30 years now. The way it works is that when you push down on the left bar, it leans the bike to the left, even though the wheel is turning to the right.

It can snow even at incredibly cold temperatures as long as there is some source of moisture and some way to lift or cool the air. It is true, however, that most heavy snowfalls occur with relatively warm air temperatures near the ground - typically 15°F or warmer since air can hold more water vapor at warmer temperatures.

That doesn't explain how the icecaps are getting bigger. There are different thermal elements at work to create ice as compared to snow. I watched South Park a couple nites ago, and they were spoofing about the same thing. Blaming global warming for freezing tempuratures around the world.
