I know alot of people will probably tell you this, but you have to use what works for you. The only thing I can recommend is that you try everything, because that's the only way you'll find if it is something you'd like to work with.

The CMS is very important, and it may be a tough decision now, but if you try them out you'll know which one is best.

Some recommendations:

Textpattern
Wordpress
Mambo OS (OR whatever it's called now)
Antoine_935
Mambo
Xoops
Drupal

!Wordpress is only a blog system, and isn't as complete as nucleus, which isn't very known...

Php nuke and Xoops is a good choice.

Cybot you should start with an easy2use system, like mambo or some nuke, if you want to give your site all what you have in mind, you should try spip, but be careful, to use the last one you need some experience in html.
If you start to understand wath you see in the code, then make one by yourself.

e107 is pretty good too but unfortunely there is no script to intergrate it with a phpbb board (it has its own forum).

md pro is good. I believe its better than PHP-Nuke, Post Nuke and most others.
