What is your favourite guitar player?

You must sort players for genre.

I start with:

Hard rock: John Sykes (Whitesnake, Tiger of Tan Pang...)
Heavy metal: Jeff Waters (Annihilator)
Sixties: Jimi Hendrix
Blues: BB King
Classical: A. Segovia
Folk / Fingerpicking: Tommy Emmanuel
Fusion: John Scofield
Jazz: Charlie Christian

........ Write your favorites! And remember, only one player for genre! Wink
My favorite guitar player of all time is Slash from Guns n Roses.

Being a lead guitarist just like him, I appreciate his unique style and how he portrays his desire for music. The best song for me is their most popular song, Sweet Child o' Mine. I know it is not the most flashy guitar solos but I think it is just right for the song and it can't be done any better. Very Happy
Classic rock: Mark Knopfler, from Dire Straits.
Hard Rock: Randy Rhoads, from Ozzy Osbourne.
Heavy Metal: Tony Iommi, from Black Sabbath.

I'm not a big fan of rock, but those three guys are gods to me. Specially Mark Knopfler. This guy was born to play the guitar. I also love his singing style!

probably Vai also.

Not really that much into the lead guitar solos type of guitarists. I like rhythm guitar more.
What is your favourite guitar player?
A human.

It's hard to tell considering there are many great guitar players with wildy different styles, making any direct comparison difficult.

Direct comparison is kinda a moot point; the question is entirely subjective and requires no greater criteria to answer than "I like this."

That said, I do find it difficult to choose a "favourite" too Wink
Being a big fan of 60's British stuff I've always liked the guitaring of Pete Townshend, from The Who....possibly not the best technically, but had a great persona on stage, popularised the windmill Very Happy and wrote most of the stuff The Who did anyway.
A true genius in musical terms, I think

Kirk Hammett from metallica!
Steve Vai
Death Metal: Rob Barret/Dallas Toller Wade (Melevelont Creation, Cannibal Corpse)(Nile)
Prog/Power: Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
Heavy Metal: Tony Iommi/Randy Rhoades (Black Sabbath, Ozzy Ozbourne[Bilzzard of Ozz band])
Thrash: Kirk Hammet/Jeff Hanneman (Metallica, Slayer)
Jazz: Jango Reinhart
Latin: Rodirigo e Gabreilia

All these people shred like machines but also bring a touch of chug (rythem) and intricate melody lines to their guitar work. All (in my opinion) are extremely great examples of what they do and in all reality are probably some of the best in there respective genres Very Happy
There are a few here.

Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Jimi Hendrix
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Ace Frehley (Kiss)
Bernard Butler (Suede)
John Squire (Stone Roses)

..and a guy nobody will ever have heard of...

a guy called Barney, who used to be the lead guuitarist in a rock/metal covers band called V8 ( I have a studio recorded CD off them years ago and have seen them live countless times. Barney was so laid back, he was awesome.
Genesis with Phil Collins is not too bad.
Jimi Hendrix for the Sixties
Great fan of late Gary Moore
Led Zeppelin

Darn - there are just so many of them. And how I feel about them depends on the mood.
There they go - Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Steve Hackett, Mark Knopfler, Steve Rothery (Marillion). These 5 make my top 5.
Munky, did I spell that right? Very Happy
