Why bother learning Xlink?

boinsterman
I worked my way through W3school's Xlink tutorial and tried to implement it, and didn't succeed. I'm sure I could have if I'd found the right documentation.

I implemented my links in XSLT by the following two methods (for the title of an article in a blog):

Code:

<h3 class="item_title">
<xsl:element name="a">
   <xsl:attribute name="href">
      <xsl:value-of select="item_title/@source"/>
    </xsl:attribute>
    <xsl:value-of select="item_title"/>
 </xsl:element>

 <br  /><br  />
<a href="{item_title/@source}" ><xsl:value-of select="item_title"/></a>
</h3>

My question is, assuming I figure out how to implement Xlink, what are its benefits? That is, what can you do with it that you can't do with a normal XSLT link, such as that shown above? Does anyone know of any working examples?
