They should have stopped at Windows2000... XP was practically the same thing, with more useless bells and whistles, most of which could easily have been added with 3rd party software for people who wanted them. If you don't use XP skins, you have very little control over the look and feel of the "classic" style. The settings are there to control all the colors and sizes, but they rarely, if ever, display properly. Then on top of that, they release versions of their other software which refuses to run unless you *BUY* the latest version of the operating system for $100 or more. An operating system should be just that: the interface you use to operate the PC. Offer the other features seperately, instead of charging everyone for things they might never use.

These are all features and improvements which are easily obtainable via 3rd-party software, which is often cheap, or even free. I have no qualms about closed-source operating systems, just MS's business practices. They are abusing their near-monopoly to make even more undue profits. The first time I've seen them making a decent effort at fairness was the recent decision to sell 2 different versions of XBox 360 - a stripped-down version with a more reasonable (yet still high) pricetag AND a full-featured version for the people who want it. I'm sure they will still come up with some creative way to force people to buy the extra bells and whistles on the full system, but at least they are making a small effort to appease their critics in THAT arena, for now. In case you are wondering by now, yes, I'm a linux user. I just happen to be using Win2000 right now because it's not my PC. I did, however, order a linux LiveCD so I can take my linux with me Wink

Well I'm reading this while running Vista beta 2 on my laptop. I guess Ill go find Beta 3. It is nice, but hardly a major step forward for Microsoft (unlike XP's revolutionary new interface).
