Iranian Programmer Sentenced to Death for Developing Porn Site Software

While we're all up in arms over SOPA and PIPA, the government of Iran continues to monitor its citizen's Internet access. The government has gone so far as to sentence a programmer to death for insulting the sanctity of Islam because of a piece of software used by a porn site.

The Star reports that programmer and Canadian resident Saeed Malekpour was arrested during a visit to Iran in 2008 while visiting his sick father. During his incarceration Malekpour was forced to make televised confessions on state TV after being tortured.

Quote:
They asked me to falsely confess to purchasing software from the UK and then posting it on my website for sale. I was forced to add that when somebody visited my website, the software would be, without his/her knowledge, installed on their computer and would take control of their webcam, even when their webcam is turned off. Although I told them that what they were suggesting was impossible from a technological point of view, they responded that I should not concern myself with such things.

The horrible porn software he created was actually just a piece of photo uploading software that a porn site used without his knowledge. In June 2011, Malekpour's sentence was suspended. But, under review by the Iranian Supreme Court, his death sentence was upheld on Monday.

If this is true, wow. Are they thirsty for blood?

... And that's why I have no interest in visiting the middle east in general.

Here is a link to an action Website in Canada where people can lobby Canadian politicians to put pressure on the Iranian Government to release him:

I think the politicians should do more than put pressure on the Iranian government. After all, the guy IS a Canadian citizen, is he not?

So the whole world is watching an innocent being murdered and no body does anything?

I don't think Iran will bend on any political pressure from the western countries, but in fact use it to their advantage to get something in return, for a situation that they only created.
I mean that Iran might ask for something like lifting of an embargo, for example.

It is sad that he went to visit his sick father and under that duress, he had to also undergo torture and forced to make false claims against other countries.

Uhmm, wow? Seriously, torture? D: Oh dear.

This sounds absolutely terrible. Is he a Canadian citizen, or just a resident? Because if he's a citizen... well wouldn't Canada have any kind of jurisdiction over this? Any I'm really confused as to how they would know all these details about him, with him being just a random visitor to Iran. Was he just chosen by random? The specifics are just really unclear...

f* Iran.

Excuse my knee-jerk reaction.

But as far as jurisdictions go, I believe a country 'can' carry out punishment to a foreigner who commits a 'crime' in their soil, especially if that country does not adhere to international treaties and so forth. Best solution? Stay the f* away.

It appears he's actually an Iranian citizens but a Canadian legal alien.

However, above all else he is an innocent human being that will be sacrificially murdered in the name of the "religion of peace".

Hi...
That was injustice. For that crime he would have given any other punishment but this is absolutely not fair in my view...

What has he done worthy of punishment?

Iran seems to act as guardian of Islam with these sort of nuisances. Previously also they announced the price of head for the people from different arena and countries. A classic example is salman rushdie, for his novel satanic verses . You may not agree with someones view but you cannot kill him in a normal world.

I think this is more than religious, it is a power struggle both at home to show "who is in charge" and to impress the imams, and internationally with its conflict with the US. No doubt it is hoping that the US/Canada is going to barter for the release of the prisoner and since it will essentially be bartering for the person's life, they can barter for higher stakes.
bukaida
Absolutely Dean. This is nothing but searching for benefits under the cover of religion. The poor programmer became the rope of this tug of war.
