Why not let Taiwan decide? Taiwan has decided. They want independence, but are afraid of provoking the mainland.
US policy since Nixon has been to introduce Capitalism into China and wait for the fall of Communism. Hell, a McDonalds in Moscow was the first domino to bring down the Iron Curtain.
It is not working as well in China because American businesses are whoring themselves out there. Cisco is actually HELPING the Chinese gov't implement filters that turn free speech into political imprisonment.
The PLA is far stronger in China than the Russian Army was in the Kremlin. The Politburo could be had - I'm not sure about the PLA.
Taiwan frustrates the Hell out of China. They would have taken it long ago were it not for US promises to protect it. At the same time, that would be the ugliest thing we would ever see.
The irony is this - the day China TRULY embraces capitalism, they will indeed become an economic power beyond that of the US.
