Which messenger do you use?

smallcalf
I myseft prefer Yahoo. First, because all of my friends use them so I can chat with all of them. Second, it has a feature that can set you invisible to some of your friends if you don't want to talk to them. Third, it can show you when your friend add something new in their Yahoo!360 or their profile.
I have used Trillian but it seem that the program does not provide me all of the features yahoo give me.
xray757
I use Trillian and it serves all my purposes at the moment. Maybe in future I need more features, but right now Trillian has enough for me.

Hey everybody. Now I'm a MSN Messenger user, just because all my contacts use it too, but here in Portugal, it's becoming more and more popular the Sapo Messenger (wich means "frog") because it is copatible with Yahoo, MSN and anoher I don't remember, plus it gives some sms's to send to all networks here in Portugal. So I see that in some time Sapo Messenger will rule, but MSN will never disappear (Just because it's Microsoft). Bye

I use GAIM (I am going die typing it as GAIM [all caps]). With it I use MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM, and Meanwhile. I am homeschooled through learnnet and they use sametime for IM (they have a psrnership with IBM that means they use mostly Lotus). Of those I end up using MSN the most followed by Meanwhile. I can't wait to see what version 2.0.0 will be like Very Happy

Simple Instant Messenger, a discontinued messenger for ICQ, MSN,Yahoo,AIM and Jabber.

i had a dualboot machine and with a little jiggery pokery i had the same history in windows and linux.

of course it only supports the basic stuff - which ist instant messanging and sometimes filetransfer. webcam or voicechat is out of the question. some ICQversion cause the SIM to crash uppon sending a message:/

so i'm desperatly looking for a messenger that does MSN, ICQ and maybe even skype in one piece of software.

Msn messenger is good but I hear MSN 8.0 is not FREE need money ? Evil or Very Mad

I use iChatAV on my mac and MSN on my PC. iChatAV is jabber, so it can interface with a lot of different protocals out there through gateways. plus the brushed metal interface does look smooth on my mac. I also hate all of the advertisments on just about all other IM clients out there. iChatAV is simple and does what its meant to do, and thats chat. it also makes video conference really simple to do.
hayley
I use gaim almost exclusively... except when it's giving me hell. Then I use AIM. All of my friends are on AIM, so it makes the most sense.
Richous05
Hey i use msn as i prefere it because all my friends use it. oh and most of my family. I dont really like it because it has quite a bit of down time in the uk it has locked me out a few times aswell saying my buddy list couldnt be loaded. Im not impressed with msn but i will carry on using it.

I use MSN and Yahoo messenger, both has a good features. What I like the most is the new flash pictures emoticon. But over the years I found out that both has decline in quality of users that has a good quality chat, most of them just talk rubbish.

think u've been reading into those crappy "msn isnt gonna be free sign the potition and pass it to 10 friends" chain letters!

im gettin sick and tired of them!

- I very much doubt Microsoft will charge for MSN in the future at anytime, as there so many free alternatives they'd simply loose out!

MSN is by far the most easiest and most commenly used (regardless of the constant server outages, random sign outs etc) and is the service i use the most!

i like it as its so simple to manipulate and with plus, makin addons and edits is a doddle!

i have yahoo runnin too but am gettin anoyed with the notification of emails keep popping up over everything!

i no u can turn off the notification but i want it, i just dnt want a box appearing in the middle of the screen!

small and efficient miranda.

darth_pyro
I use Gaim with Yahoo, MSN, and AIM protocols. I love it because I can use many different protocols with only one program. Also, when several people are talking to you at once, you don't have a million windows open. It's just one chat window with several tabs, so you can switch between conversations quickly and easily. The name of the person you're chatting with is in the tab, and it turns green when the person is typing something, and red when a message has been sent. Very nice and easy to use. It also supports file transfer, smileys, but no webcam as of yet. I am hoping for webcam feature someday.
Atomo64
I use GAIM, GTalk, skype and the Live Messenger 8 Beta...
GAIM with: MSN, IRC, ICQ, AOL
GTalk 'cause sometimes I talk with some ppl
skype because of the same as above and for really secure conversations
and the live messenger 'cause my friends usually want to show me something that requires the 'original' client, so I have to keep it.

I recently got Windows Live Messenger and I've not really been that impressed. The UI is definately more modern and has quite an advanced feel to it (it's sort of similar to Skype's in-chat window) but it feels much more cluttered and less simple. If a person on your buddy list is busy or on the phone, their icon is lightened in shade, so it's not that easy to tell from a glance if they're available or not. Unless the chat window takes up a substantial amount of your screen, a lot of the information is hidden. Overall, it's ok with a few nice, promising features (like foldershare) but I've not been too impressed.

For MSN / Jabber / Google Talk etc, I highly recommend Gaim 2.0 Beta (with the Guifications plugin installed) where you can use several chat networks at once from the one program.

Into video calls? One word: Skype

I use Gaim only with MSN. All of my friends only use MSN, so I have to stick with it. And I use Gaim because I use Linux, and I don't like aMSN at all.

I've used IRC, ICQ, PalTalk, Internet Phone, MSN and Chatzilla. I think Yahoo IM is the best because it's the only IM that gives the user the option to join rooms according to interest, country/region or language. Because Yahoo IM has this feature, I am able to go to, and become apart of, the community that more closely reflects my interest. Additionally, (for those who speak one or more foreign languages), it affords me the opportunity to seek out those rooms where that language is spoken and enables me to practice that language -- both in spoken AND written form.

NO other Instant Message application provides that feature.

Hanging out with people from other countries, speaking their language, learning about their custom, values, beliefs and "lived experiences" help to tear down stero-typing, bigotry, racism and soci-political "misunderstandings."

BRAVO Yahoo IM for helping to contribute to world peace and understanding!

I am currently running msn messenger 8.0 beta version. I had to get a patch to be able to run. But there are still a lot of bugs in it.
For example if I am talking to other people they dont respond, if I meet them back in real life they ask me why i went offline so suddenly. So it logs off witouh you even knowing it. Not really great thats why i am back working with the old windows messenger.

Msn messenger 8.0 has a great new layout. Its green and orange but the colors are all adjustable.

I have a aim user id. I also have a msn id.

In linux i've got a program called gaim, i use this so that i am online on both my aim and the msn.

You guys should really give gaim a try:

"Gaim is a multi-platform instant messenger that supports many commonly used instant messaging systems including:

* AOL Instant Messenger (via OSCAR or TOC protocols)
* DirectNet, 3rdparty plugin for DirectNet - peer to peer instant messenger
* Gadu-Gadu
* Google Talk, IM only (using the Jabber protocol)
* ICQ (via OSCAR)
* Internet Relay Chat
* Jabber (XMPP)
* Lotus Sametime
* MSN Messenger
* Novell GroupWise
* OpenNAP
* QQ, 3rdparty plugin from OpenQ
* SILC
* Yahoo! Messenger
* Zephyr
* AdiumX" from the wiki

Skype has a good IM interface. And don't forget QQ!

I use Windows Live Messenger(beta) or equivalence of MSN Messenger v8.0. Why?
MSN Messenger is one of the most expandable Chat service in existence. second probably only to ICQ. It is easier to use and faster in message transfer and it also take less RAM AND many people use it. All of my friends have MSN Messenger and very few have other chat softwares. So there is no need to use other type of chat program. The best thing is, I get all I need in one single software. With the possibilty of plug-ins, the features are virtually limitless. Messenger Plus! is a plug-in that even MSN itself would recommend to its users. But wait, there is more. With Live Messenger, you could send offline messages just like ICQ and you could also share files offline, more like P2P transfer. You could run up to 8 or more MSN Messenger(not yet for v8.0) using polygamy patches and a ton of other features including MSN skinning and you can choose to save your messages so that you can continue the next time you go online.
For more info, check out:

I'm currently using MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger at the moment, but I'm rather cheesed at MSN's interface. Though I can't really do much about it; most of my friends seem to be using that messenging program. :S

I have AIM also, but I haven't been using it as much lately. The new version (Triton, was it?) doesn't click with me very well.

I need to communicate with MSN, YM and AIM subscribers in my work. In this case that you need to use this softwares simultaneously, then i suggest you use Trillian Messenger. This is YM, ICQ, AIM and MSN packed in one software. It saves space and feels comfortable to use too. Very Happy

A long time ago, I was a devoted user of Trillian, it was convenient and pretty nice feature wise. But then I started to get curious about all the things you can do with MSN, so I ditched Trillian and decided to use the true clients for the services they were meant for (Since when I used trillian, I often could not connect with people on AIM, or can't send/receive files from MSN).

I like MSN, but AIM was another story. I hated it so much I all together stopped using it for almost 2 years (and also one of the reasons I lost touch with a lot of my friends who went off to other states for college). So, I decided to start using it again, but opped for Gaim instead of Triton. I don't like it, I don't hate it.

I've always used MSN. Until one of my online friends told me to DL YIM. It's quite cool. I like the emotions. I'd use YIM more, but none of my offline friends have it. AIM sucks. It's too hard lol. So, if my offline mates had YIM I'd prefer YIM, but they don't. So MSN.

Does anyone remember the MSN chatrooms?
I do Razz

Im using msn as a messenger, and yahoo as hotmail. That is because I got an yahoo acount before my msn messenger, so most people got my yahoo acount to send mails. So now I cant just have one mail...

Anyway, im not so much on msn so im using yahoo most...
wabik90
Hi, I use polish gg messenger. GG it's short from gadu-gadu and it's the most popular messenger in Poland.
Q5U8
I use Yahoo Msgr, it rocks. In second place, MSN Messenger.

Sometimes, I use Gtalk, because at this time I know a few people that use this system.
lordstrife
I myself have stopped using all the messengers except for google talk and I only have 2 contacts in that. IM's are good but damn if Ican remember all the people I end up putting on them
biljap
I stopped using it few months ago but I was using ICQ for a long time and then most of my friends started to use Skype and I had to switch to it.
Peterssidan
I use msn messenger 7.5. It's becouse all my friends use it but I don't really like it. To much irrelavent stuff that I'm not interested in. I would prefer a applikation that only supported plain text to be sent to each other and files of course. That had been nice.
djclue917
I use Kopete simply because I use KDE. Smile I like it more than Pidgin (GAIM) because of its features and of course, its KDE integration.
Shewolf
I use Adium, and it works well for me. There I can talk to people using msn, yahoo and googletalk at the same time, without any problems.
bigdan
I use Pidign using AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Gmail and ICQ. Loving it!
tamilparks
i use YAHOO, REDIFFBOL,
bulek
I currently use Windows Live Messenger with removes ads. I also tried Trillian but I didn't like it so much.
inventor
I'm quite used to GAIM or now called pidgen. I hate aim and all the ads they put into it.
zanzou
MSN for people I know IRL, AIM for people I've met over the internet. It's not that I chose to do it that way-- it's that people I know IRL don't have AIM, and people I know from the 'net don't have MSN.
Ankhanu
Adium on Mac, GAIM on Linux and Trillian on Windows.
DarkPhoenix
I use Yahoo messenger, because is the best.
It's more easy to talk with mic than the MSN.

Surprised Laughing Embarassed
zjosie729
I use all of them because my friends are all on different ones. Because of it, I used meebo.com to IM.
sambhav
yahoo and msn....

gtalk does not have invisible mode....
babumuchhala
Me uses Yahoo! Messenger because the initial friends I made were on Yahoo, and then somehow my whole friends circle got around Yahoo! Instant Messenger. Have tried using MSN but hardly any friends there and above that YIM & MSN are now interconnected so No worries about missing anyone important

Sometimes I also use Google talk (the desktop one) and have a fair amount of friends thanks to its Orkut integration
BlueVD
Kopete seems to fit my needs... It's multi protocol (so i can use my ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and Google talk accounts at the same time); Also it has support for file transfer protocol, webcam, etc... And it's spyware, malware and exploit free...
vineeth
Most of the time, its GMail's built-in chat. Rarely uses Skype and Yahoo Messenger...
dirkvb
I've got a msn-account, but on the copmputer where I work most, msn doesn't work.
So I don't use msn a lot, and I don't use another.

My vision on msn:

Its once again a product from microsoft which is used by most of the people, but is has lots and lots of (big) errors.
eznet
Pidgin here. I love it because I can use all of my messenger accounts with just one program. Even more convenient is the fact that there are versions for Linux, Windows and portable USB friendly versions as well.

Its cool cause I can access my MySpace IM, Yahoo! IM, MSN, and Gmail all in one.
chartcentral
I'm using Yahoo! Messenger. Smile
manlear
I prefer Yahoo Messenger along with the poster. Has everything i need atm. Very Happy
chartcentral
Because I've recently installed Ubuntu 8.10, I'm now also using Pidgin Instant Messenger. Smile
jomar
mine is yahoo messenger
jsfdan
I used Yahoo! when I first browsed the Internet. Now I use MSN. I used to use AIM but it's too damn hard to download.
invizibility
Pidgin FTW. Really cool except I wish it was written in windows native rather than GTK and had some skinning support. Smile

The AIO thing really does save a lot of space and works really well. No complaints. Happy user. Smile

Pidgin in unix, Trillian in windoze.

I used to use AIM but I didn't have so many friends there so I stopped. I use both Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live. I rarely go online lately though. and when I do, I'm on a busy status.

I have used Trillian but it seem that the program does not provide me all of the features yahoo give me.
I use trillian... it allows me to use MSN, yahoo, AIM, ICQ, and other services all at the same time. I have friends on all services so I have to use all of them. I have no other reason to use all of them other than my friends being on them. Personally, most of my friends are on AIM, so that would be my first choice.

i used yahoo messenger when i was younger but then downloading it seems like a forever procedure and frequent spamming by those infected computers forced me to quit it

msn messenger was used by me but then gave up too since none of my frenz uses it

i mostly use gtalk now since i'm on orkut and all my friends are there too
nadji25023
I use MSN , but I also use yahoo .

My all time favourite Yahoo Messanger and

Windows Live Messanger!
harismushtaq
I am not sure if the question is about the service or the client. I use yahoo, msn and my companies jabber. For client, I use pidgin where I can connect all 3 but there are not all features supported. Like file transfer does good from the jabber network but does not do as good with the MSN. If any bidy knows of such a client that supports all features like audio/video and file transfer then let us know.
lethaltriad
Mostly I use Windows Live Messenger mainly because all of my friends are on it. I use yahoo also sometimes because it seems to work a little better with my webcam and every now and then. I'm always connected to my gmail chat on my blackberry and also use the facebook chat every now and then
Xaferrow
i use mxit

MSN Messenger 9.0 because all of my friends use it
kacsababa
I accept the best mostly is the multi-protocol clients, but most friends use MSN and I'm lazy to switch to something else. Just start Skype sometimes for some work related stuff...
jinnixue
Most of the time I use Google Talk, for it's tiny and enough for chating and voice communications, and it also migrates with Gmail best.
AllyCharmed
I have to say MSN is my favorite, then Yahoo. I don't like AIM or any others so much as I find Yahoo/MSN easier to use and less annoying.
ProfessorY91
Pure ownage: Meebo!

Also known as "Instant Messaging Anywhere". I think this service is great because it lets you chat with all of your friends from ALL of the following networks:

- Yahoo
- AIM
- MySpace
- MSN
- Google Talk / Gmail
- Facebook
- ICQ
- Jabber
- Flixster

I think that list pretty much owns anything else anybody comes up with. Especially since I can do it all simultaneously. Details? http://www.meebo.com

AIM, but I have to use Pidgin because the default AIM program hates my computer Mad

well for me there's alot of messenger which suites your needs but as you said it depends upon to your surrounding..Even though skype or msn is good and easier to use,its useless if your friends doesn't like it.In short,use messenger which most of your friend does..
songwang
What is different between MSN and I'M?

Does anyone of these can send message on mobile phone.
biljap
I use Skype for long time. I’m satisfied with it. A lot of my friends and almost all of my colleagues use it too. I don’t know even if I could switch to another messenger because I need those contacts and saved chat history…
medesignz
I use MSN... Its one of the originals... I have used Skype and Aim in the past, but I always seem to fall back into MSN.
anakin_skyrunner
I only use Live Messenger, as most others have this one as well.

I use Yahoo and an open source program that I cannot remember the name of. It works in Ubuntu which is what I need at work to communicate with team members who are not physically present.
dude_xyx
I used to use Yahoo and Skype a lot. But now most of the time I stay online in Gtalk and MSN and less and less in Yahoo. Gtalk is great for voice chat. It doesn't has too many features like Yahoo or MSN so far but in other hand take less resources.
foreverdestiny
Windows Live Messenger.
Sparda
I am using Windows Live Messenger as of now, but I was using Pidgin for a while. I liked Pidgin because of the ability to log on several different messenger servers such as MSN, AIM, YAHOO, IRC, SKYPE, Ect. Lately I've been getting processor changes from the software plus some other issues with 'Adding Contacts' so I've sticked with MSN ever since.
anakin_skyrunner
I only use Windows Live Messenger...
