what is ww2?

speeDemon
Please dont say world war two...
Confused
Laughing

I've noticed that some websites have a ww2 prefix, instead of www,
my knowledge tells me that a folder inside a website can be accessed using the foldername.website.com format, so either this is a sub folder for some websites, or it has some other meaning...

could someone please clarify.
k_s_baskar
can you please provide some example sites starting with ww2 ?

ww2.sony.com.hk/login.php
ww2.cox.com

It's a subdomain just like www. I'm not sure why it's being used.

I'm sure I've seen ww2, but with very sophisticated large corporation Websites. If I come across it again I'll think of this topic. I just thought it was an attempt to separate a certain group of Websites from the www ones.

I'm fairly sure one of the purposes they use it for is server load balancing. The www, ww2, ww3, etc. are all different servers that mirror the same site and, when you enter the domain name, it redirects you to the server that isn't loaded to the same level as the others.

'www.' isn't a subdomain, it's a protocol. Wink
I used to think that too though. Smile

Every time that I have seen it, it indicated that the main server is being mirrored (server 2, etc.). My company uses that type of arrangement to make sure that data entry is always available.

www stands for World Wide Web but HTTP or HTTPS is the protocol.

Peterssidan is right, www is just a popular subdomain name for websites. Some people are starting to realize how useless it is, as the top-level name can be used (i.e. google.com instead of www.google.com), see http://no-www.org/.

In addition to load balancing, because of how HTTP works there is some benefit to putting different kind of resources on different domain names; for instance HTTP authentication and cookies do not need to be sent when fetching static files (images, scripts, CSS) but would be if the same domain was used. Plus, you can use specific software/hardware configurations.

Yep its just an old standard left over from the 90s.

It's like most ftp places being at ftp.watever.com whereas the actual address is either ftp://watever.com or ftp://ftp.watever.com

Also did anyone notice firefox removed protocols in one of their versions? I have never raged so much. I've had to change the default firefox settings (about:config) about 10 times recently whereas I only needed to once before and it wasn't really an issue.

Quote:
http:// - protocol

www - subdomain

josso.co.uk - top level domain

/studio - subdirectory

josso.co.uk - JUICE FM.m3u - file

it means world war II!!!! haha just joking!

well, that must be a DNS problem. You don't have to write anything like www ... if your DNS know what IP adress is related you can write just anything ! www was just a name for what protocol used, today well it is not needed.
