What is the best (free) program to make an animated gif?

foumy6
Hi,
I am looking to make a nice little animated gif. I have heard gimp is the best, but I don't know if that is free or not. I have tried using paint.net which is pretty much a free version of photoshop.

Really the big problem is that I don't know how to make an animated gif using pictures (So dont say gifsoup.com because that is just for youtube videos) I have tried on paint.net but their tutorials are very weak and not very helpful at all. So any help will be greatly appreciated!

I use GIF Animator 5 - quite low cost and really worth my while.

I've had pleasant experiences with UnFREEze. The program is simple to use and takes up less than 30 kilobytes on your hard drive. Link: http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/

gimp is entirely free -- open source.

I find it difficult to use for gif's though. Animation is not its strong point.

Awesome! I've heard of them before. Is this what you used to make your signature with? Cool

for linux you can find several animated GIF "makers" in the repositories.
you can turn any video into an animated gif with ffmpeg http://ffmpeg.org/
for windows I only know of the Gimp
making animated gif's with the Gimp isn't difficult however it lacks efficiency.
all you have to do is put the 'display time' in Milliseconds on the Layer name
Layer 3 (500ms)
Layer 2 (500ms)
Layer 1 (500ms)
..ect..
then you can optimize it for animation and you are good to go.
only downside is that you can't edit several layers at once

GIMP. I use GIMP for my animated gifs. Also, it's open source and works on all platforms.

Hi, I think if you are looking to make simple gif, GIMP is quite good - and it is obviously free-
A tutorial is here:
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Simple_Animations/

Microsoft GIF Animator (is freeware) is also another option. It is no more available from microsof but it is downloadable from
http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-GIF-Animator/3000-18512_4-12053.html.
It would be interesting to know how different people rate these two programs in comparison.

GIMP *is* free, both in the free as in free beer and free as in freedom of speech.

I've used it several times to create gifs. Basically, the procedure is creating layers, then saving as a GIF file and checking the animation button, if i recall correctly. Each layer is a different frame..

I've just started using GIMP. I haven't used it for animations yet, that's a project for another week. It does seem to be a very powerful image editing program, although the learning curve can be quite steep if you're not used to using such programs. Fortunately, there are many tutorials out there, some of them on YouTube that walk you through many of its features.

I was unaware that one could use GIMP for making animated movies. I'd imagine one could fine tune the graphics in GIMP for using it to make GIF images, but one would need animator software to make the GIF image.

GIMP is OK. Photoshop is better.

Yes, GIMP does provide the ability to make simple animated GIFs. See: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Simple_Animations/ and http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Advanced_Animations/. You can use the GIMP Animation Package for this: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Using_GAP/

Photoshop costs more than my car. GIMP is free. If I had unlimited funds I'd probably use photoshop, but for my needs GIMP does the job well enough.
