Board game - The Order of the Stick: the Dungeon of Dorukan

Ankhanu
Last night we played a boardgame made by the Order of the Stick comic creator, OOTS: The Dungeon of Dorukan. As it's based on the comic, it doesn't come as a surprise that the game uses many of the jokes and plot lines found in the comic.

You play as the members of the Order of the Stick, moving through the Castle of Dorukan to defeat Xykon in the lower levels of the dungeon. Each character has a set of schticks that they can perform in combat, starting with 3, and gaining more schticks to become more powerful as the game goes on by cashing in killed monsters and loot. The players move through each level of the dungeon, battling monsters, helping one another and screwing one another over as they see fit, while looking for the stairs down to the next level of the dungeon to ultimately find Xykon down in Xykon's lair and do battle and escape the castle.

The board is a dynamic, composed of randomized cards, up to 8 cards per level of the dungeon, that are flipped over randomly as you enter a new room on each floor. Rooms are searched for stairs down to the next level, finding stairs on a 1-3 roll on a d12. Each player has a hand of battle cards, that are either monsters that are played against the other players as they enter an empty or new room, and or "screw this!" cards that allow you to modify the rules of the game according to their text. The number of monsters you battle in a room is determined by the level of the dungeon. On the first floor, each room will have 1 monster, on the second floor, they'll have 2 monsters, etc.

All in all, the jokes and help/hinder PVP action makes for a fun game. Given that almost everything is randomized, each game promises to be different. It is a long game, however. There are three game forms, depending on how long you want to play and how many players there are. The "short" game we played took us about 5hr to play, though I imagine it would be quicker now that we know the rules... technically the short game should be 2-4hr, and it goes up through medium and long games, to "the weekend killer" that should take at least 7hr.
