Child Beauty Pageants

Hello_World
Top news in Melbourne this week has been the child beauty pageant, with the 'star' Eden who is 6 years old. After all the protests and wrath towards this pageant, it was basically shut down.

Given all the news surrounding the pageant this week, what do you think about child beauty pageants?

Do you think it is okay or is it wrong?

Is it harmless or child exploitation?

It is rather like the Miss World competition - it is still going on somewhere but nobody really gives a toss because it is completely outmoded and pretty offensive to many people.
It is a bit like blatantly racist conversation - we all know of examples and we know it goes on but most of us find it offensive and few would join the conversation (I hope).
The reason it survives is that there seem to be a large number of women who appear to want to live through their kids, and convince themselves that this is OK because little Amy-Sue just loves the whole thing and 'I'm only doing it for her benefit'......personally it makes me uncomfortable and itchy

It certainly makes me uncomfortable and itchy LOL.

All the arguments against the Miss World competition are still there, but adding all the further arguments about children doing the same thing...

I'm glad it was shut down. No-one (oops sorry, about 30 people did) wants it here.

But some people are clearly for it, I'm curious how they justify it. How do they convince themselves that this is okay? Can those parents not at least try to live through their children by some form of beneficial activity instead?

Self worth dependent on how pretty you are? Thats a recipe for mental health if you ask me.

Yeah, I find it all a bit creepy and sending the wrong message to kids about how they should value themselves.
Gaining pride through winning competitions from effort (sporting/academic/artistic/etc) is one thing, but simply being the 'best' looking person is all a bit shallow to me, and I also worry how the children will view themselves when their looks change and they're no longer considered 'beautiful' by their fans or judges.

I am actually ok with child beauty pageants in general except when kids try to mimic sensual dancers with all the skimpy outfits. It's supposed to be a place where kids showcase their talents and charm, doing magic tricks, or a singing little mermaid or doing a Hawaiian dance. It was really good before. I don't know what's got into parents these days. The media is probably to be blamed for sending wrong message through pop culture.

That's called a talent show though, they're fine of course, but also very different to the beauty pageants mentioned by the OP.

In my country, child beauty pageant was really popular before but it has nothing to do with beauty (but if the little girl really looks cute, it would be plus for her). It was all about talents and how witty or funny the kids answer their questions. Simulating a beauty pageant was just a way to make it different from the usual talent show. But boys also get to join as an escort prince and get a hand of some of the questions for fun.

@Hello_World. The way the US does those child pageants to me is the equivalent of child abuse. However, if moms could send in photos of their kids and they don't have to be subjected to all of the media pressure and going through all of the training and stress of preparation, and parade and perform on stage, then it could be great. I remember they used to run something like that in a local periodical in South Africa. The moms could send in photos of their child, these got featured over a period of time and then voted on. The closest to exposure was a photoshoot of the winners and runners up. And then that was usually the end of it.

As long as there are all those huge prizes in terms of advertising contracts etc., parents will always use their children to participate to the point of exploitation and perhaps even unintentional abuse so I think what the Australians did was great.

What makes them wrong is... everything about them, really. From the horrible, pushy parents who want to use their kids to compensate for their own feelings of inadequacy to, well, the fact that such things even exist. I mean what the hell is wrong with people who want to look at kids in that way? They've got a name for people like that.

It's not the kids. Kids at young ages can't really make up their mind if they like something or not because I played baseball for awhile and then I realized I really didn't like it. So I quit. Back to the topic though. Child beauty pageants are more for mothers to say that their daughter is the best in the world or country or state or county. All about their reputation and want to be the best.

Absolutely, here the problem is with the moms, frustrated, uneducated and narcissistic moms are the ones sending kids to these awkward shows.
