Best FTP software’s for webmasters

rolandgill
I would just like to hear opinions and experiences of fellow webmasters. What do you think is the best FTP software both free and commercial?
cybersa
FileZilla no other for free version.

I've tried many FTP's the last few years including Filezilla and FlashFXP, but I must say Filezilla it's trully the best one. With Filezilla you can transfer multiple files simultaneously which makes the transfer faster (I personally transfer only 2 files simultaneously because some hosts limit it, but it allows you to transfer up to 10 files).
Besides, Filezilla's frequently updated and definitely easy to use.

So, in my opinion Filezila is the way to go.
SultanMA
I think u don't need a FTP software..

Hope u find the good one and share it here. thanks.
ogah
cuteftp is good
also available portable cuteftp
pirate
filezilla works best for me, never had any problems and like someone else said it is updated regularly so i would recommend that.
Josso
Yeah agreed Filezilla is good - is fast and easy to use. Used SmartFTP for quite a few years, but it got completely ruined and not really free any more. Used to get half transferred files and all kinds of weirdness.
mgeek
Visicommedia has ACE FTP free. The professional version is better though.

kirii
filezippa,cuteftp are good..
i would recommend a good ftp software too, mostly used by china web masters

brianj
filezilla off course, but any multithreaded FTP client is good to me
u16888
I've used AceFTP, SmartFTP, and CuteFTP.

CuteFtp is good but not free, so I'll recommend Filezilla, its free n good.

There are other free SFTP and FTP clients, but FileZilla takes the cake because of ease of use.
socials
Filezilla is the best, faster and easy to use. This program just do what you need, transfer files at high speed.
mgeek
Coffeecup also has its FTP software. The nice thing about it is that one could edit documents from it. But of course, if one already has EditPlus, that won't be necessary.
welshsteve
I choose Filezilla everytime. Reliable, fast, simple to use and most of all FREE!!

Why not? How else are you going to transfer files to your website without using a clunky web based uploader?
dude_xyx
It's hard to find alternative which can beat FileZilla. There are other good FTP software with their own specialties. But FileZilla has all these feature.
haola
I recommend filezilla, and it is best.
Asap170
I use FileZilla every day. I love it. It also gives you nice error messages to debug stuff.
ak97
I use and recoomen Filezilla. It is good, stable, free and open source.
vidafenomenal
also vote filezilla.

Filezilla is the best and the most user friendly...

To say something different, I quite enjoy Cyberduck.

I'm guessing it may not be for everyone, but it works quite well for me.

Good for you. I installed it and tried it and found it wanting. But of course if you find it functional, then who am I to dissuade you from using it.
Cheers!
dude_xyx
Never heard of this Cyber duck software. What makes it better than FileZilla ?
nepalstar
Till now I haven't use FTP software but through the forums and blogs I came to know that Filezilla is ideal for FTP, with Filezilla we can transfer multiple files simultaneously but some hosts limit it.

So, I'm gonna try Filezilla...! if you found any good software than Filezilla plz share with us...!

Actually, I think that it isn't better than FileZilla. Nor is it better than AceFTP Free.

I was looking for free PHP IDE With FTP support, but could not find anything,
But I started using Aptana IDE for coding and Total Commander for uploading files to the server.
Uploading files to the server to see how it works, when you are still building the website is quite time taking thing to do.
I use XAMPP server to test my website on my localhost.

Hope it was useful.

Best experience I had so far has been with Flezilla!
portoskt
filezilla is good enough for me

I have put together a good list of the best FTP client software. This thread was help among other resources so I thought I reply here.
Hexes
I'm a linux user and I've got two favourite ftp clients.
GUI:
Filezilla - its free, its fast, its reliable. Official website: http://filezilla-project.org/
Personally i don't like programs with GUI that's the main reason why I abandoned filezilla.

Console:
LFTP - that's my way to go. It's very reliable client. I can say it's rock solid. Some users probably will say that lack of the gui is the main disadvantage of this client but for me it works perfect. I don't need all those fancy buttons and controls. I need a powerful, fast and free ftp client. If your needs are the same then lftp will definitely suits you.
portoskt
i always use filezilla for this purpose, and i dont need anything better
sukhjinder
I started with Filezilla and liked it. I find it better than WinSCP. the reason I say this is because FileZilla better recovers from broken connections. BTW both are free.
meiz
Filezilla Portable. Arrow
Blummer
Don't know what to say, I myself use Filezilla. When editing files directly on server, I used an external editor and there you go. I think it's just perfect.
ankur209
I am using FILEZILLA from last two years and is quite satisfied with it !

It has got a simple understandable usr interface where even a novice can learn how to simply upload and access the server panel ! Cool
kmontano
On my windows systems I always used Filezilla with great results. When I moved to Mac recently I began trying out different clients, namely Cyberduck. I really could not figure out the interface and found it to perform below my standards. I ended up going back to Filezilla on my Mac. It seems to be the only suitable free solution.
miteY
I go with FileZilla because it is popular and has awesome support

Back in the early 2000s I used to work with CuteFTP and CuteHTML. Right now I couldn't say that CuteFTP is "best and fastest".

Well nothing to be excited about then. I never had to find an alternative for Filezilla ever since I have started using it. It used to save passwords in a just ordinary file which was a bad flow but all you had to do was not letting it to save your passwords. It's the best way to keep security up anyway.
portoskt
after i use many of them, filezilla is my favourite
Chellesei
I haven't tried those payed FTP clients so I can't really say which one.
But for free versions, I like FileZilla is the best. Very Happy
therimalaya
Simple, lightweight, free- filezilla is the one we need
nivinjoy
The Final Verdict..

FILEZILLA

Nothing else can pose a threat to its position.. Very Happy
mrdecoteau
I use Core FTP LE. It is very minimalistic but is easy to use with a nice, simple interface.
jcreus
I've only used FileZilla and I'm happy with it. It works more than fine, with many features.

My favorite is Filezilla and also don't forget about Fireftp(Firefox ftp addon). It kinda reminds me of Filezilla. But either one is the one I would use. Sometime ago I used gFTP, but eventually switched over to Filezilla. Haven't turned back to my old client since. Very Happy

I found CuteFPT is the good ftp software till I used. so I think CuteFTP is the best FTP software, I feel easy using cuteftp so once try it... I hope you'll also like that software.
sysna
i'm using file zilla and i think it is currently the most popular ftp client software available, but if you want a simple solution without the need of downloading a software you can try online clients like "net2ftp" which is very popular too.

I go also for FILEZILLA.
appsapps
One of the web hosts I use requires Filezilla because of its FTPES support. No other FTP client seems to work as well with it. I have seen other users attempt to use something else, but every time, they end up making posts on the support forum complaining that they can't access their space.
senolsenolx
CrossFTP and core ftp good working for me
Possum
filezilla is constantly getting upgraded.. So its is on top of security issues. Once you learn the interface its works in well with FriHost.

And its Free..

FileZilla and FlashFXP are good ones to use. Especially if you're a web master who has to add stuff to his site a lot.
bogisha
I use filezilla, and you can also try fireFTP extension for firefox, it is FTP client built inside your browser (firefox and those based on firefox).
JamesCheng
I use filezilla, and also fireFTP which is extension for firefox, it is both pretty nice for my daily jobs.
XchaosX
I used to use smart FTP then I switched file FXP and now I use the FTP feature in Dreamweaver
appsapps
I have always liked Filezilla but I have additional reasons for using it, now.

If I am going to have to use an FTP client, it might as well be one that works with ALL hosts and not just a few. It would be annoying to have to have one client for some hosts and another for the rest.

One of my sites, hosted on a private host somewhere else, requires FTPES for security. Filezilla seems to be the best for handling that and is the FTP client recommended by that host. Any time someone tries to use something else, they run into problems sooner or later, and can't connect to the server.
yakuZza22
FileZilla as a standalone client , is the best , and for who uses Firefox (like me) .... FireFTP add-on , is another good choice.

I also prefer Core FTP Lite Edition. It is stabler that FileZilla in my personal opinion.
Gregoric
I used to use FileZilla and FoxyFTP (or how was it name, an addon adding FTP to Firefox browser) a year or more ago. Then, I started using phpDesigner (now version Cool which provides automatic FTP uploading.

How does it work? When I open the app, it loads files from FTP and when I edit and then save it, the modified files are automatically sent to the FTP server so I can just type in the address into the brpwser and see how does it look immediately.

Saves a lot of time and you can be sure that it will alwayws look like that, so you do not need create separate versions for local and remote server.
miteY
FileZilla, ALL THE WAY!

I have tried other FTP software, but always find myself coming back to Filezilla. Why pay for unnecessary functionality, when there is a free application that gets the job done on time?

Nothing compares in FILEZILLA - free and perfect.

Filezilla is the best for me!
I love it!
Cruxader
I've only ever used Filezilla. I see no reason to try anything else, it works very well.
dude_xyx
Have been using FileZilla for 5+ years and yet to have major problem with it. I haven't seen any better free FTP client yet.
RosenCruz
Total Commander works for me for FTP. Before that, I was using FileZilla Wink
Cosmoslayer
FileZilla, definitely. Open-source all the way! Wink
dustindallas
I like Filezilla too, seems to be a lot of people using it and it's handled all my needs.
Nick2008
Filezilla! Free and open-source. Very Happy
biolu
Filezilla works fine. Especially the portable version, no installation needed and I can use the FTP anywhere I go!
Gatos7
I also use filezilla for simple stuff but since you ask from a webmaster perspective ... if I want to connect to a dedicated server I prefer Bitvise SSH Client: SSH Terminal, Tunneling and File Transfer http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier

It has some extra features like a command line sftp client (scriptable) besides the graphic one, which in some situations can save you a lot of time (supports wildcards etc). It also opens up an SSH at the same time with the SFTP.

Also some stuff I can't find how to do them with Filezilla. For example when you right click a file and select "File permissions" on filezilla, although you can change owner, group and public permissions, you can't change the owner or group id.

On the other hand tunnelier doesn't support drag and drop like filezilla.

So in the end if I need to just upload a file I'll use filezilla. If I need to do some serious work I'll use tunnelier.

Hope that helps
jajarvin
I use net2ftp.com - a web base FTP client
you con also downdload net2ftp and install it on your own site.
decontaminatoR
I prefer FileZilla, cause it is free, frequently updated, and has sooo much settings (even a SOCKS Proxy setting!), you can easily save Servers using the Server Manager and you can do also cool things like simultaneos directory traversal.
technodz
in the past i used a lot Filezilla but now it doesnt matter for me, because i got some experience in these things and i use whatever i see like winscp : an ssh and sftp client *usefull for server admintrators
krackers
On OSX transmit or flow are the two best
mrkk
If you're using OS X, then the best one is simply from Finder. Go → Connect to Server..., and type in the ftp address of the server. It opens it up in a standard Finder window (easy to deal with). If you like command lines, then sftp, which was written by the Internet Engineering Task Force, is a good go-to for UNIX-based operating systems. I'm not sure if it works on Windows.
ummahtalk
Net2ftp is also good

I've been using FileZilla since 2005. It is really one of the few apps that made me 100% satisfied. The program should do what it is supposed to do. Doesn't need to be overfancy. Both the client and the server versions.

I recently start to use FileZilla,
and the most inconvenient is that there is no search function to find the file by key in a file name.

The alternative method I found is to set a file name filter,
but I forgot to disable the file name filter everytime I enabled it,
and when I connect another FTP,
I will be shocked by the empty folder until I realized I set a file name filter before.

I rather like WinSCP. Because it is barebones and easy to use. I do find that I use FileZilla often as well. I only use them for really big item changes. As I'm quite happy with using cPanel File Manager for adding, moving and changing scripts.

Trust me, it never occurred to me to look for a search function within FileZilla because I tend to keep my hosted files as neat as possible, and with a mirror on my local computer. So, if something is to be searched, I can search locally.

I use WinSCP on windows.
