I'm really impressed with the viewer contribution integration. That's really awesome.

Think I need some translation here. Viewer contribution integration? Confused
Ankhanu
Did you watch the video?
Was the sound on?

It's answered there, and is a major focus point of the whole vid.

I didn't realize that ponies were such a phenomena! Maybe it's not as popular in the US (or with the adult population) than with other groups. Do you know if it's mostly popular with other countries?

I do recognize some of the other shows, though.
coolclay
Quite fascinating, gives me a little more understanding of the "bronies"! I think this viewer contribution idea has been around before, but only in the producers asking for input rather than the viewers just making it and having it accepted by the producers. It certainly helps publicize and get peoples interest that's for sure!
Ankhanu
Yeah, it's pretty novel and clever. It sort of creates a personal slant on the show the viewer is also contributor... makes you feel like an owner rather than a consumer.

It's a US thing most of all. I think Canada as well.

Is it a particular age group? When I was in Walmart today I actually noticed a "My Little Pony" product. Of course they're around, but I definitely wasn't at a level where I'd call it a sensation.
deanhills
No. I don't think it is a particular Group, but maybe Ocalhoun can fill us in. How I got interested was Ocalhoun's signature that had Rainbow Dash in it, and he then mentioned something about bronies. Anyway, I'm happy Ocalhoun introduced the ponies as I had great fun watching all the shows in YouTube. From the point of view of creativity, the characters are dynamic and the dialogue as well. Lauren Faust who created the show did a really great job. She said that she hated the pony show when she was a kid, and always wanted to make it more alive and real, and somehow along the lines must have captured an adult male audience as well when she re-created it.

It is indeed a nice gesture of the producers to put some things in the show that they know that the viewers like or have noticed.

I know a few years ago, when the wanted to cancel Jericho because of low viewer numbers, (what a shame) that there was a huge protest (Season One ended very spectacular with a lot of questions) because there was no ending. They then made a not-so-good second season of only seven episodes. (Season one had like 24 episodes)

Again a nice example of how the crowd can influence the producers. Smile

Derpy Hooves for the win!

I've said it before elsewhere, but the adoption of Derpy into the actual show is one of the most awesome things about it.

Well, like other television shows, the demographics that watch them were carefully studied...
In this one, there was a strange anomaly...
There was the expected popularity among young girls... but there was also a spike in popularity in the 18-25 male demographic.
(Part of the reason you don't see much evidence of this is that most adult men would be a bit embarrassed to let others know they are a fan of the show... which is why there is less evidence of it around than there might otherwise be.)

Why is this?
There's only one way to find out: watch some of the show.
If you understand why it's popular with that group, you're probably well on your way to being addicted... but if you don't understand, you probably never will.

IF it's also a Canadian thing, then I'm much more disconnected with society than I thought... I'm Canadian.

Embarassed ..... sorry, I'm the one that's a bit disconnected here. I brought in Canada because Bell Canada ran an ad of a kind that included a reference to magic ponies and I mistakenly thought that was THE magic ponies. And then learned from someone on the Forum that magic pony is a very common saying that has been around for decades.

I got a pretty good kick out of this. Thanks for sharing. Cool

I prefer unicorns than ponies.

Isn't she lovely.

Why not both? ^.^

deanhills
That's a nice illustration loremar. I love good unicorn drawings. But I have to agree with Ocalhoun, why not have both. What I like about the ones Ocalhoun included in his post are their special characters. Like really alive and human. You should check them out. Here are some highlights, however you can get all of the shows in YouTube. As far as I know there are 26 of them. Very Happy

I'm not sure if I can find time to watch but I used to like cartoons and horses. I remember when I was at grade school, I used to ride a kalesa(Taxi horses) in my way to school. Which explains my fondness to drawing horses. I remember I draw comic strips with horses as characters and unicorns as super heroes. So actually they're not the first to create a cartoon with horses in it. Laughing

Hell, it's not even the first My Little Pony cartoon.

Not even close!

This is generation 4!

(The previous 3 conformed to all the stereotypes you'd expect from such a show, and didn't attract adult followings like this one did.)

I did not realize it was generation 4, however I'd never paid attention to it until I saw it in your signature. Then I checked out one of the YouTube shows, and got hooked. It's an excellent animation production. The details are really magnificent. I'd look at a show more than once sometimes and copy some of it, this Lauren Faust is a gifted artist and the characters are dynamic too. Here's one of my favourite characters:
loremar
Yeah.. Black Eyed Peas in the background... Love it. And the character is very very dynamic... Dancing

Awesome show Ankhanu. Thanks for posting it. I learned lots from it too. Particularly what parasprites mean, etc. Great stuff!

I saw the most disturbing and horrifying my little pony porn while looking at the baby animals on 4chan. I will never be able to look at mlp the same way ever again.

Well, that's rule 34 for you -
Internet Rule #34: If it exists, there will be a porn version of it, no exceptions.

It's less disturbing if you know ahead of time that everything, no matter how sweet or innocent, has a porn version somewhere.

*edit*
It is a little disturbing how common MLP porn is... If you ever do an image search for my little pony, I would recommend turning 'safe search' on.
